California State Univer- sity, Chico's Faculty Recog- nition and Support Com- mittee has announced its selections for the 2014- 2015 Outstanding Faculty Awards. The awards, which in- clude Outstanding Pro- fessor, Teacher, Research Mentor, Adviser, Lecturer and Faculty Service, are among the highest within the university. Faculty members are nominated by their peers and selected by a faculty committee. President Paul Zingg announced the awards to campus this week. Outstanding Professor Professor John Eckal- bar has been selected for the Outstanding Profes- sor Award. A member of the De- p a r t m e n t of Econom- ics since 1978, Eckal- bar teaches s ome o f the depart- ment's most challenging courses, including econo- metrics and economic fore- casting, and mentors ten- ure-track economics fac- ulty. He is also responsible for developing and manag- ing the department's hon- ors program, which fea- tures annual student pre- sentations. During his tenure, he has published 23 journal articles and has served as a referee-reviewer for 16 na- tionally and internation- ally known journals. Al- though he is participating in the Faculty Early Retire- ment Program, he contin- ues to conduct research, in- cluding a recent paper on the economics of childhood vaccines he co-wrote with his son, pharmaceuticals researcher Walter Eckal- bar. Eckalbar holds a doctor- ate in philosophy from the University of Colorado and master's and bachelor's de- grees in economics and fi- nance, respectively, from Louisiana State University. Outstanding Teacher Professor Zachary Jus- tus has been selected for the Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition to t e a c h i n g courses in speech com- munication and con- ducting re- search, Jus- tus coordi- nates the semiannual Chico Great Debate, an event drawing more than 2,000 students to the city center for a day of dialogue about a key social or polit- ical issue. Justus' reach as an ex- cellent teacher extends beyond the classroom; he runs an orientation pro- gram for graduate teach- ing associates and offers mentoring and profes- sional development work- shops for the associates. He is also a leader in the area of technology: Shortly after joining the Depart- ment of Communication Arts and Sciences in 2009, he worked with the Uni- versity's Technology and Learning Program to co- vert the lecture portion of a large public-speaking course from prerecorded to live stream, among other efforts. Justus holds a doctorate in communication from Ar- izona State University and master's and bachelor's de- grees in human communi- cation and speech commu- nication, respectively, from CSU, Chico. Outstanding Research Mentor P r o f e s s o r A n i t a Chaudhry was selected for the Outstanding Research Mentor Award. Since join- ing the De- p a r t m e n t of Econom- ics in 2007, she has sup- ported doz- ens of stu- dent s in pursuit of their ac- a d e m i c a n d c a - reer goals. In addition to maintaining a full teach- ing, service and research schedule, she supervises internships, mentors inde- pendent student research, involves students in her own research and writes letters of recommenda- tion. Currently, she is co- mentoring student interns who are working for the Economics of the Sacra- mento River Conservation program, supported by a $300,000 grant Chaudhry and economics profes- sor Pete Tsournos were awarded this year. She holds a doctorate degree in economics from the University of Wyo- ming; master's degrees in economics and in agricul- ture and resource econom- ics from USC and the Uni- versity of Connecticut, re- spectively; and a bachelor's degree in economics from Lahore University of Man- agement Sciences in Pak- istan. Chaudhry serves as the economist for the Geo- graphic Information Cen- ter at CSU, Chico. Outstanding Adviser Professor Kate Tran- schel has been selected for the Outstanding Adviser Award. Since joining the Department of History in 1996, she has served as a club ad- viser, aca- demic ad- viser and ca- reer mentor to students in myriad capacities. She served as adviser to the former History Club and to Kappa Alpha Psi, one of two campus fraternities for African-Americans. Since 2002, she has served as adviser to the European Studies minor, helping stu- dents study in Europe and participate in Russian lan- guage programs, and has mentored dozens of grad- uate students into promi- nent master's and doctoral programs. Perhaps her most nota- ble advisory role is to the student club S.T.O.P. (Stop Trafficking of Persons), which organizes the Hu- man Trafficking Aware- ness Week on campus each spring. Recently, Tran- schel helped create the Stop Trafficking Founda- tion, a community-based organization aimed at working with the S.T.O.P. to spread awareness about trafficking. Transchel holds doctor- ate and master's degrees in Soviet history from the University of North Caro- lina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor's degree in inter- disciplinary studies from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Outstanding Lecturer L ec t urer T imothy Sistrunk has been selected for the Outstanding Lec- turer Award. Since join- ing the De- p a r t m e n t of History in 1995, he has taught a wide ar- ray of his- tory classes s p a n n i n g from antiq- uity to the present. In addition to his reputation as an outstanding class- room lecturer, he is consid- ered a program builder; he helps develop new curricu- lum and does the "legwork" to ensure these classes be- come part of the Universi- ty's general education cur- riculum. A longtime member of the campus' Academic Senate, Sistrunk serves as chair of the Faculty and Student Policies Commit- tee and is a member of the Senate Executive Commit- tee. Perhaps his greatest contributions have been in the realm of sustainability education; among other ac- tivities, he recently helped convene a faculty working group to develop curricu- lum for a new interdisci- plinary program in experi- ential education in nature. Sistrunk holds a doctor- ate and master's degree in history from the Univer- sity of Kansas and a bach- elor's degree in anthropol- ogy and history from Kan- sas State University. Outstanding Faculty Service Professor Tracy Butts has been selected for the Outstanding Faculty Ser- vice Award. A member of the Department of English since 2001, Butts' com- mitment to d i v e r s i t y and her sup- port for stu- dents who come from d i sa dv a n- taged back- grounds are difficult to match. In ad- dition to teaching a full course load, in 2014 she also agreed to serve as the interim associate dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Over the years, she has played a crit- ical role in working with and mentoring students, serving as faculty advisor for the multicultural soror- ity Lambda Sigma Gamma and mentor for the Educa- tional Opportunity Pro- gram's Summer Bridge pro- gram. In her time on cam- pus, she has also served as director of the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies and as CSU, Chi- co's chief diversity officer, among many other service activities. Butts holds a doctorate degree in English from the University of Georgia and master's and bachelor's de- grees in English and liberal arts and sciences, respec- tively, from Virginia Poly- technic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
