The Raiders have nine defensive players on season-ending injured reserve, including the team's top two strong safeties, two linebackers, a starting defensive end and a starting cornerback. By Josh Dubow TheAssociatedPress ALAMEDA The Oakland Raiders defense was dealt a big blow back in the pre- season when middle line- backer and defensive sig- nal caller Nick Roach suf- fered a season-ending concussion. That injury set the tone this season for the Raiders, who have had to piece to- gether their defense on the fly because of a litany of in- juries. The Raiders (2-12) have nine defensive players on season-ending injured re- serve, including the team's top two strong safeties, two linebackers, a starting de- fensive end and a starting cornerback. Those absences have played a big role in Oak- land's struggles this sea- son as the team will miss the playoffs for the 12th straight year. "I think it takes a toll, but it's hard to use those things," interim coach Tony Sparano said. "Ev- erybody's hurt right now. It's just the next-man-up mentality for us and we've been fortunate that some of these young guys have gone in there and done a good job. That's the good news, is that you're not go- ing to have to sit here at the end of the season and won- der whether or not so-and- so can play." That's the one posi- tive from all the injuries. The Raiders have gotten plenty of chances to see what some of the younger players can do when they get playing time. That will give them a better idea of what needs to be priori- tized come the offseason. "We're about playing to- gether, we're about playing with passion," defensive co- ordinator Jason Tarver said. "What's been great is the young men keep jumping in and rallying around each other.That'swhatit'sabout." Miles Burris stepped in for Roach and struggled at the start in his adjust- ment to middle linebacker but now has shown versa- tility to play all three spots in the future. When outside linebacker Sio Moore went down last week with a season-ending hip injury, former college safety Ray-Ray Armstrong got his most extensive time ever at linebacker with 63 defensive snaps. "It's always great hav- ing good opportunity," Armstrong said. "It's what you do with it. Just trying to make the most of it and help my team out." Armstrong is not alone in getting an opportunity. Benson Mayowa, claimed off waivers from Seattle earlier this season, has got- ten ample time in place of LaMarr Woodley at defen- sive end. There has been a revolv- ing door at strong safety af- ter starter Tyvon Branch and backup Usama Young went down with injuries. Brandian Ross stepped in and played much better than he did a year ago as a replacement starter and also showed the ability to play in the slot in nickel packages. Larry Asante also played well before he was put on injured reserve earlier this month. The secondary has been a work in progress much of the year with starting cor- nerback Carlos Rogers out for the season with a knee injury and fellow starter Tarell Brown slowed in re- cent weeks by a foot injury. Those injuries have al- lowed second-year player D.J. Hayden and rookie T.J. Carrie to get signifi- cant playing time that will pay off in the future. "I think that's very, very valuable and I think there's huge carry-over," Sparano said. "I think that that provides a real easy tran- sition into Year 2 for them. The game doesn't sur- prise them. The speed of the game doesn't surprise them. The preparation that it takes to play the game doesn't surprise them." Notes: • The Raiders an- nounced the game Sunday against Buffalo is sold out and will be televised lo- cally. Oakland sold out ev- ery home game this season. • CB Tarell Brown did not practiceforasecondstraight day with a foot injury but still could play Sunday. • DL C.J. Wilson re- turned on a limited ba- sis after missing practice Wednesday with a knee injury. Raiders' defense hit hard by injuries Oakland lost linebacker Roach in preseason, setting tone NFL him in the jump to the NFL, said everybody wants to end this season on a pos- itive note despite all the outside chatter about the coach's future. "We don't talk about that stuff at all. We're focused on the Chargers, all that water cooler talk is just that," Roman said. When asked whether he still has a special affinity for the Michigan program and university, Harbaugh again wouldn't bite. "Again, I really don't want to talk about any other job than the one I have or talk about any- body else's process," Har- baugh said. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 the start of a new half, the lid would finally be off the bucket. It was. Katie Gallagher scored nine of her 11 points in the third as Red Bluff out- scored Ferndale 17-9 to ex- pand the lead to double- digits. Winning finished with 12 points for Red Bluff. Ashley Exum had seven points and 13 rebounds. Ally Drury and Stepha- nie Brunello each had six points. Ferndale was led by Rachelle Regli, who cele- brated her 18th birthday with 19 points and 13 re- bounds. Emma Gomes had seven points and Katrina Senes- traro and Bailey Collings each had six points. Sarah Richardson added a free throw. Red Bluff plays Shasta at noon Saturday in the con- solation championship. Ferndale plays Paradise at 9 a.m. in the seventh- place game.
