Delta Gamma page 5 T heir legacy of Delta Gamma began when the mother of Susy "Skelley" Kelley Gilbert '70, Virginia Stanford Kelley, Alpha Epsilon '41, selected DG at Washington University in St. Louis. Then Susy became a DG at SMU and, most importantly, became a DG big sister to Ginny Gilbert Wheeler-Jones '72. Through the friendship, Susy was introduced to Ginny's older brother, Rick, on a blind date. Susy and Rick were married in 1975, and one of their children, Katie Gilbert Niebes '00, became an Alpha Upsilon. "Delta Gamma provided a warm, nurturing friendship for me at SMU," Susy said. "I felt a sense of loyalty, caring, and confidence through our sisterhood. The friendships I made have been life long, and the memories of my time living in the DG house are one of the golden times of my life." It was these fulfilling experiences that inspired the Gilbert family to try to help out by contributing to the new Alpha Upsilon house. "I feel with the completion of our new house at SMU, we can continue to have success in attracting wonderful new Delta Gammas sisters," Susy said. Susy and her husband, Rick, reside in Weston, Florida. She enjoys visiting their children and grandchildren. She also enjoys bridge, golf, and book clubs. She can be reached at sgilbert99@aol.com. Delighted to Pay It Forward Gilbert Family Proud of Their Delta Gamma Membership "It would be wonderful if we all can help our chapter and pay it forward to the next generation of Alpha Upsilons." –Susy "Skelley" Kelley Gilbert '70 Sisters Gather for 1962 Pledge Class Reunion Life in the Delta Gamma House An Excerpt from the ANCHORA of Delta Gamma – Winter 1972 By Susan Kelley Gilbert '70 and Jane Temple Johnson '70 "There are 34 girls living together—laughing, playing, shouting, studying, fighting … growing. They are sisters of sorts, watched over by a mother of sorts. This is the Alpha Upsilon chapter house, and there is no better place to begin an explanation of life in the house than with the housemother, who the girls fondly call "M.R." She seems to set the mood, and as with all mothers, exemplifies the love that holds the "family" together. "Her high, crackling voice echoes through the Delta Gamma house at Southern Methodist University as she organizes housework, cooking, and entertaining. "M.R." is the backbone, the strength of the chapter. She is proud of her girls and challenges them to become the best sorority on campus. Her influence is over-shadowed by advice from alumnae and the work of the officers, but this vibrant little lady counsels officers and members, never commanding them, but always offering suggestions and alternative for a better organization."
