LINCOLNSTREET School to host book fair starting Tuesday SERRF students at Ol- ive View Elementary have been busy learning about veterans. Students learned what a veteran is, wrote letters to veterans and learned about flag etiquette. They also learned about local veteran Joshua Woody, who attended Corning High School and lost his life in Desert Storm along with 18 other soldiers on June 25, 1996. Students created 19 red, white and blue chains of kindness, which corre- lates with SERRF's focus this year, "Rachel's Chal- lenge." Each chain repre- sented one soldier who lost their life in the attack. Kevin Benson, a local Vietnam War veteran came and spoke with students about Veterans Day, and also took a walking field trip to Yost Park to honor the memorial of Woody. They decorated the me- morial with red flowers, a large American flag and a large number 19 to honor the soldiers who lost their lives that day. Under the rules proposed Tuesday, only training pro- grams deemed to be work- ing well would be eligible to receive money from federal TEACH grants given to pro- spective teachers who agree to teach in disadvantaged schools. Factors considered include a training program's success in placing its grad- uates in jobs, and the suc- cess of a teacher's students on standardized tests. The TEACH grant pro- gram pays up to $4,000 a year to students, and about $100 million is awarded na- tionwide each year. "New teachers want to do a great job for their kids, but often they struggle at the be- ginning of their careers and have to figure out too much for themselves," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said. Schools complain that linking the performance of graduates and their stu- dents to the teacher's alma mater is unfair, and teach- ers' unions say it could po- tentially make it harder to place teachers in schools in high-poverty areas. Randi Weingarten, the president of the Ameri- can Federation of Teachers, said the rules use a "test- and-punish" model instead of offering a sustainable so- lution that raises the bar for the teaching profession. "Teacher-preparation programs that send gradu- ates to teach in high-need schools, where research shows the test scores are likely to be lower and the teacher turnover higher, will receive lower ratings and could lose funding," Wein- garten said in a statement. Deborah Koolbeck of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Ed- ucation worries that fed- eral regulations could curb innovation aimed at mak- ing teacher training more rigorous.
