8A Daily News – Saturday, September 10, 2011 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Shelters begin feeding dogs along with homeless owners Have you got the time? Do you ever ask yourself, "Where did the time go"? For those who have a job, they may be watching the clock and counting the minutes until they go home. Others may be trying to fill the hours and wonder what they can do. Whatever the case may be, there are a variety of circumstances that can influ- ence how we spend our day. The real- ity is that no matter what we do, time stops for no one. One day I thought about the fact "This day never returns again". From that point on, I began to view the way I spend my time in a dif- ferent light. MCT photo Animal rescue volunteer Karen Shoji prepares to give a vaccination to Thomas Stevens's dog, Malenko, during a weekly outreach effort in Fresno. FRESNO (MCT) — Three years ago, Janie Partain's church was feeding the homeless in downtown Fresno, Calif. But church members had little to offer the dogs and cats the homeless brought with them. So Partain and her husband, Steve, along with a few friends, started showing up each week with dog and cat food to feed the animals. Since then, the effort has blossomed into its own ani- mal rescue for the homeless. Called Westside Rescue, the group offers the pets everything from collars and tick treatments to spaying and neutering — and some- times even a new home. "I never knew we had that amount of homeless pop- ulation _ and then I realized how many of them had dogs," Partain said. Partain and friends she met through local dog res- cues decided to form their own group to help the home- less care for their animals. The group's primary goal is to raise money to buy food and provide services for the pets of Fresno's homeless. Randy Little is one of them. Little lost his job last year as a watchman at a repossession yard and he has- n't found work since. But his dog Repo, a Rottweiler- Queensland mix, remains his constant companion. He bought a month's worth of food for Repo just before he lost his job. The food didn't last long. Westside Rescue has given them dog food, paid to have Repo fixed and gave the dog a tick treatment. "They are a godsend," Little said. Like Little, some homeless people keep their pets even after they lose their homes. Others got them from friends who wanted to leave the animal with someone they trusted. Some homeless simply bonded with a stray from the street. The companionship of a pet makes sense, Partain said. Many homeless people get rejected by family or friends, but their dog will never judge them. "They love you no matter what," she said. Every Friday night, Westside Rescue members show up with pet food, vaccinations, flea and tick treatments, collars and leashes. There is so much to accomplish in life and yet it can feel like we never have enough time to get it all done. It is true, we won't get it all done; in fact that is part of the good news. How can I say that? Simply put, we are not cre- ated to get it "All" done, only God can do that. Yet we are given choices everyday concerning how we spend our time. Perhaps we may not have the luxury to come and go as we please if we are working for someone in a struc- tured format. Even then, we still can choose how we spend our time in the way we are thinking. Challenges surely arise and things do not always go as planned. That is the time when we may be tempted to get anxious, frustrated or angry. Cir- cumstances beyond our control can and will affect all of us in one way or another. As things continually change, as well as our expectations and desires, we may experience a variety of emo- tions. To compensate, we might think we have to hurry up and take care of business. Trying to speed up, to "save time", can cost more in the end. Some try to multi-task while others feel like they should be triple-tasking. Is that really possible? Some would argue yes and amen, they do it all the time. Others say there is no way, it is unre- alistic to even think about doing more than one thing at a time. Are we kidding our- selves? What is the real pur- pose behind the desire, demands or expectations of multi-tasking? Is it to try to accomplish more in a certain amount of time, or to some- how magically save time? Jim Croce wrote a beautiful song long ago about the desire to save time in a bottle, but is it really possible to save time? How do we save anything? In the area of finances, we could open a bank account, where a teller would then ask if it is for checking or savings. The next step is to make a deposit. We choose how the finances are spent or if they are saved. The reality is that once we start spending money the time will come when we have to make another deposit. Obviously, whatever is in the savings is to remain untouched, other- wise it would no longer be called sav- ings. This is very basic information that most would already know if they have ever dealt with a bank. Under- standing that concept, I also think about the reality of the word spending. In the case of banking, it also requires the process of addition as well as sub- traction, continually using the basic principles of increase and decrease. If there is a lack of funds from too much WE MUST BE GOOD STEWARDS Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, Overland Park, Kan.: From the time of Adam, the primary role given to humanity was stewardship. Adam was empowered to tend the garden and to protect it. This responsibility speaks to what it means to seek prosperity. The sages counseled: Who is considered wealthy? One who is satisfied with what he has. The seek- ing of prosperity must be tempered with sacred purpose. They also taught that if it were not for the evil inclina- tion, man would not build a house or take a wife or beget a child or engage in business, as it says: "All labor and skill- ful work comes of a man's rivalry with his neighbor." The urges to create, control and to acquire are primitive ones. If not tempered by a consciousness that considers the greater good, then the desire for prosperity as an end to itself cer- tainly conflicts with religious values. If one does not take stock and say to oneself, "Now that I can take care of my family, what purpose does my acquisitiveness serve? Am I being a good steward? Am I protecting or destroying? To answer those questions one first has to create, then realize that endless desire neither makes one happy or holy, spending, more finances have to be added to balance the check book. Taking the examples of Brenda Ballentine GodTalk saving and spending from the financial realm, now I will ask this simple ques- tion. "How are you spend- ing your time? Once spent, we can't go back and make another deposit. Truly we are spending each moment of our life as we take another breath and another heartbeat. These are gifts from God that we call life, wonderful gifts for us to enjoy. I want to encourage people to remember, it really is impossible to save time. It is like a river that just keeps flowing towards its final destination. We can celebrate the fact we have been given this time and spend it accordingly. When you find yourself asking, "Where did the time go?" take a moment to stop and think about how you spent your day. Knowing this day never returns, I have decided I am going to spend it on purpose, and with a purpose. It is my hope that by taking time to write this, you too will see the concept of "time" in a new light. Brenda Ballantine has her Masters in Psychology and is working on her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She is a published author of the book Pitfalls From Put-Offs. Brenda is a public speaker who is available to address areas of Clutter and Other Messy Things in Life. You can visit her at 3womenonamission.com. Some of the homeless people the group serves say Does the desire for prosperity conflict with religious values? they're grateful for the help. and finally one must apply his talents for wealth creation to a sacred purpose. It is for this, and only this, that humans were created. PROSPERITY CAN BE CORROSIVE The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor of St. Andrew Chris- tian Church, Olathe, Kan.: There was not a needy person among the early Christians. All of the people who were able sold their houses, took the proceeds to the apostles and gave to those in need. Well, that's probably not quite true, but that is what we are told in the book of Acts, the story of the early church. The truth is probably even more amazing: these people lived in the real world. They had not withdrawn into a cave community; they retained control of their coins and cattle. They lived in the world but they were not "of it." That is almost impossible — especially today. We live in a world dominated by the marketplace. We are bombarded with messages that tell us we are what we have. Our young go to college not to stretch and grow but to land a high-paying job. A 2010 study reported that those with $100 million would feel secure if they had 25 percent more.
