4B Daily News – Saturday, September 10, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Obama pushes voters to pressure Congress RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — His sleeves rolled up and his finger stabbing the air, President Barack Obama pitched his newly unveiled jobs plan with campaign- style fervor Friday, urging Americans to pressure their lawmakers to pass his $447 billion initiative. ''We're tougher than these times,'' he declared. ''We are bigger than the smallness of our politics.'' Venturing out of Wash- ington to promote his initia- tive, Obama's first stop after addressing a joint session of Congress Thursday was on the home turf of one of his top Republican antagonists. Speaking at the University of Richmond, in the district represented by House Majority Leader Eric Can- tor, Obama made a full- throated appeal for public support, punctuating his remarks with a sharp refrain: ''Pass this bill!'' ''It will jump start an economy that has stalled,'' Obama said, conceding that a nation stuck at 9.1 percent unemployment is no longer in recovery. It was the first of many expected efforts by the pres- ident to rally public support for his program. The presi- dent and his advisers have made it clear that he intends to build pressure on law- makers by emphasizing the urgency of acting on his proposals this fall and mak- ing sure they are held accountable if nothing pass- es. Next week he plans to go to Columbus, Ohio, a city represented by Republican congressmen and a state that is home to House Speaker John Boehner. ''I'm asking all of you to lift up your voices,'' he said. ''I want you to call, I want you to email, I want you to tweet, I want you to fax, I want you to visit, I want you to Facebook, send a carrier pigeon, I want you to tell your congressperson the time for gridlock and games is over, the time for action is now.'' Libyans find mass grave GALAA, Libya (AP) — In a grove of pine trees near this mountain village, resi- dents have dug up the remains of 35 bound and blindfolded men who they say were shot at close range by Moammar Gadhafi's military. Dozens of miles away, a search team has exhumed the bodies of 18 detainees who died on a hot summer day while locked in a ship- ping container by Gadhafi guards. As Libyans cope with the aftermath of their six- month civil war, more evi- dence is emerging that loy- alists of the former regime savagely abused and in some cases killed detainees just before fleeing from advancing rebel troops. There's no proof of sys- tematic killings ordered from above, but Gadhafi's incitement against the rebel fighters he called rats ''opened the door for this kind of barbaric conduct,'' said Fred Abrahams of Human Rights Watch. A warrant for Gadhafi's arrest, issued in June by the International Criminal Court, focuses on killings and arrests during the initial phase of the uprising that began in February and eventually toppled the regime.
