The Lion's Roar Indiana Delta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon • Depauw University FALL 2014 T hings are changing around Indiana Delta. We had an incredibly productive summer through the development of our undergraduates and the enhancing of our house. The chapter sent seven brothers to Leadership School, and now almost 75 percent of our men are graduates of Leadership School. This means we are heading back to a position of strength on campus. These men have taken a hard look at the reality of DePauw's Greek life and fully realize what the numbers are telling them. As you can imagine, our house is a big part of the recruitment process on today's campus. With the new renovation, we are the only house that has individual heating and a/c units in each room. We also have the newest chapter house renovations. SAE F&H is committed to capital improvements as the men increase membership. If you are planning a visit to campus, please contact the house director for a key to one of our guest suites. The three rooms on the first floor are set up for visiting alumni. Just check in to Hotel Indiana Delta and enjoy the memories. Finally, this year's Monon Bell game is being held at "the other school." Following the game, we will have a cookout for all SAE alumni. Please take the time to stop by and meet the men of Indiana Delta; you will not be disappointed. These include adherence to bylaws both local and national, increasing awareness of the need for campus and community involvement, the importance of the ritual, recruitment, and adherence to principals of The True Gentleman. The commission is composed of me, Darrell Brackney, Franklin College '71, Dave Eggers '05, Steve Oetting, IUPUI '09, Paul Paris, IUPUI '12, and Kyle Bisdorf, IUPUI '12. However, several things happened right off the bat to side track our efforts. First, over Christmas break last year, the house was devastated by frozen pipes and water damage. This made the house uninhabitable for the remainder of 2013-14 school year and all those who had been living at the house made their way to university housing. On the other hand, we did end up with a silver lining to this dark cloud that had befallen Indiana Delta. A few of the disruptive older members, who had caused the chapter to stray from its principle as True Gentlemen, decided it was time to move on. This allowed our sophomores to evolve into the leaders with the forward thinking that was needed. All the members of the commission tip their hats to them as they have shown the desire and mental fortitude to turn Indiana Delta into a progressive fraternity—maybe one of the best that DePauw University has ever seen. We believe the recent Leadership School, along with the fundamental changes the national fraternity has made to abolish hazing and pledgeship, will make our men true brothers. It is time to embrace the future, and with the new renovations and improvements of the house, the chapter is ready for explosive growth. It will take a lot of effort from every member of Indiana Delta and the alumni to stay the course and recruit new members who bring many good things to the table. This will ensure we build a strong sense of brotherhood from the newly initiated brothers to the older alumni, who might think this change does not follow their tradition. Only one other fraternity has taken this approach and their membership growth is off the charts. Progressive efforts sometimes get progressive results, but I caution everyone to keep a positive attitude about your brothers old and new. Listen to everyone as they want to be heard and keep your mind open to new ideas, as we all have much to learn. Even some of us "old guys" still pick up something new occasionally. My best advice to everyone is an age-old saying, "Think twice before you speak once." I heard that a long time ago, and it still rings true today in how we should act and speak to those around us, especially as True Gentlemen and brothers.
