Los Molinos calls off season LOS MOLINOS — Los Molinos High School cancelled its 2011 varsity football season, Tuesday, three days after the Bulldogs' opening game. The Bulldogs varsity roster consisted of only 12 players entering their season opener against Williams. A mid-game injury dropped them down to 11 players and the Bull- dogs played the majori- ty of the second half with no substitutes. The junior varsity program is to continue and players were prac- ticing as of Tuesday afternoon. "We just didn't have enough players," Los Molinos varsity foot- ball coach George Wil- son said. Last Meeting 2010: Champion Christian 38, Mercy 55 — Mercy made quite an impression during their introduction to 8-man football, scoring the first 20 points during their season opener against the visiting Mustangs. Quarterback Mercy Lopez rushed for 277 yards and four touchdowns and also passed for 130 yards with a touchdown to Michael Uhalde. Uhadle also had a rushing touchdown and Royce Crane scored twice on the ground for Mercy. Mustangs' Scouting Report After losing to Mercy in their season opener a year ago, the Mustangs rallied to win six of their next seven games and cruise into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from the South League. Quarterback Luke Stephens has graduated, but the team's leading rusher from 2010 Colin Gawthrop is set to take over as the primary sig- nal caller. Gawthrop rushed for 1,275 yards a year ago with 13 touch- downs. Leading tackler (123) Tyler Marr is back. He also served as a dual run and receiving threat on offense. Tight end Darrell Zabley returns after catching four touchdowns as does tail back Daniel Lee (364 yards). 1B Wednesday August 31, 2011 Mercy Warriors 2011 Football Schedule Sat Oct. 15 vs Dunsmuir Sat Oct. 8 at Happy Camp Fri Sept. 30 at Butte Valley Fri Sept. 23 at Redding Christian Thr Sept. 1 at Champion Christian Sat Oct. 22 vs Big Valley Sat Oct. 29 vs Liberty Christian Sat Nov. 5 vs Hayfork By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Outside of section champion Hay- fork, the Mercy Warriors offense a season ago was as potent as any 8- man team's in the North State. Quarterback Mitchell Lopez made 6:30 p.m. moves like he was a real life video game. Tail back Royce Crane would have been known for his speed if his hits hits on defense weren't so fero- cious to overshadow and Michael Uhalde filled in between. All three skill players have gradu- ated, but what Mercy has left for 2011 may have been the foundation to their success a year ago. 4:05 p.m. Senior center Chris Bartlett anchors an offensive line that features one of 8-man's most imposing guards in 6-foot, 3-inch 330-pounder Logan Baer. The pair will team up with junior lineman Juan Rosales in what on paper could be the Warriors' strength. Second year head coach Paul Viet- ti said he knows what he lost in the graduating class, but it's something that can be overcome if the offense plays better as an overall unit. "The seniors we had last year, they were able to make up for mistakes," Vietti said. While Lopez and Crane had the ability to make tacklers miss, the key this year will be for the line to play mistake free ball to allow this year's crop of skill players to take advantage. The Warriors' will use a two quar- terback system that will be switched from play-to-play when needed. Harlow Johnson is the better pass- er and Matt Misener is the better run- ner. Senior Jordan Stasinowsky will also factor into the offense, both in his ability to receive and rush the ball. Mercy spent the first half of 2010 struggling on defense. They allowed an average of 56.5 points over their first six games. Their final three games however, the Warriors conceded just 24 points per game. The difference? Philosophy. "What we learned is we have to go be aggressive and go for turnovers," Vietti said. "We just need more pos- sessions than the other team." Mercy's defense is keyed by their Monster Back position, this year a role being taken on by Stasinowsky. The Warriors will likely mix up their line and linebacker combina- tions, flopping Bartlett and Baer around. Nick Feser and Isaac Williams will have contain duties playing as defen- sive ends. Alejandro Guerrero is expected to contribute at linebacker. Things are already off to a strong start for Mercy, who learned they will H Finesse players gone, Mercy powers up likely receive a forfeit win over Her- long in a couple of weeks. That win without any wear and tear is nice for a team with just 12 ros- ter players. "I really like this group of guys," Vietti said. "We may only have 12, but they're 12 very solid, dedicated guys." If Mercy's offensive line can play with the intensity to match their phys- ical attributes, a return to the playoffs is in reach for the Warriors. 10 Brenten James 11 Matt Misener 14 Nino Modr 22 Nick Feser C/S Mercy Warriors 2011 Football Roster SO 5-8 185 QB/S S TE/DE 23 Harlow Johnson QB/LB 34 Juan Rosales 46 Isaac Williams 55 Chris Bartlett 57 Alejandro Guerrero FB/LB 65 Logan Baer 88 Tony Garcia OL/LB NG SO 5-6 140 JR 6-0 155 JR 6-2 185 JR 5-7 185 OL/NG/K JR 5-9 195 TE/DE SR 6-2 190 C/NG/LB SR 5-9 230 SO 5-6 150 SR 6-3 330 SO 6-1 120 88 Jordan Stasinowsky WR/RB/S SR 5-10 150 Shae Mesker Tehama Family Fitness Center 2498 South Main St • Red Bluff • 528-8656 Improve your golf by improving your fitness with a Certified Titleist Fitness Instructor at Tehama Family Fitness Center.
