Tuesday, August 30, 2011 – Daily News 5A WORLD BRIEFING Obama taps economist for top White House post WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a public deeply dissatisfied with his han- dling of the economy, Presi- dent Barack Obama on Monday tapped a prominent labor economist to join his cadre of advisers and help steer a fall jobs agenda that will be critical to the presi- dent's re-election bid. In nominating Alan Krueger as chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Obama gains an economist with expertise in the labor market and unemployment, a key drag on the U.S. economy and Obama's presidency. Krueger, a former Treasury Department official and Princeton University econo- mist, has advocated for hir- ing tax credits for businesses and increased government spending on infrastructure, two programs Obama aides are considering proposing this fall. His appointment also caps a wholesale makeover of Obama's economic lead- ership team during the past year. Several high-ranking advisers, including Lawrence Summers, Christina Romer and Austan Goolsbee, have all left the administration, leaving Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner as the only top offi- cial remaining from the president's original econom- ic team. Obama has often reached within his administration's ranks to fill vacant posts on the economic team, and Krueger is no exception. Though he spent last year at Princeton, he served as assistant secretary for eco- nomic policy at the Treasury Department during the first two years of Obama's administration. Gregory Mankiw, a for- mer CEA chairman under President George W. Bush and long-time acquaintance of Krueger, said Obama's new nominee has a reputa- tion as an analytic, data-dri- ven economist, not as a champion for many specific policy initiatives. While Mankiw said he believes Krueger is highly-qualified for the post, he doesn't expect him to push the administration in any new directions when it comes to tackling the nation's eco- nomic and unemployment woes. Afghans deliberately scuttled US- Taliban talks KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Direct U.S. talks with the Taliban had evolved to a substantive negotiation before Afghan officials, ner- vous that the secret and independent talks would undercut President Hamid Karzai, scuttled them, Afghan and U.S. officials told The Associated Press. Featured prominently in the talks was the where- abouts and eventual release of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, who was captured more than two years ago in east- ern Afghanistan, according to a senior Western diplomat in the region and a child- hood friend of the Taliban negotiator, Tayyab Aga. The U.S. negotiators asked Aga what could be done to gain Bergdahl's release. The discussion did not get into specifics but Aga discussed the release of Afghan prisoners at Guan- tanamo Bay, Cuba and in Afghanistan at Bagram Air Field. Published reports about the clandestine meetings ended the talks abruptly, and sent Aga into hiding. Polygamist leader Jeffs in critical condition HOUSTON (AP) — Polygamist sect leader War- ren Jeffs was hospitalized in critical condition Monday after telling corrections offi- cers he's fasted in the weeks since receiving a life sen- tence for sexually assaulting underage followers he took as spiritual brides, a prison official said. The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who has a history of refusing to eat while incar- cerated, was stable, Texas Department of Criminal Jus- tice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons told The Associated Press. It was uncertain how long he would be hospital- ized. Jeffs attorney Emily Detoto told the AP her client ''hasn't been feeling well'' and was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler on Sunday night. She declined to elaborate. Lyons said Jeffs told cor- rections officers he's fasted in the time since his convic- tion earlier this month, though it was not immedi- ately clear how long he'd gone without food before being hospitalized. During Jeffs' trial, prose- cutors used DNA evidence to show he fathered a child with a 15-year-old and played an audio recording of what they said was him sex- ually assaulting a 12-year- old. Space station may need to be evacuated CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronauts may need to take the unprecedented step of tem- porarily abandoning the International Space Station if last week's Russian launch accident prevents new crews from flying there this fall. Until officials figure out what went wrong with Russia's essential Soyuz rockets, there will be no way to launch any more astro- nauts before the current res- idents have to leave in mid- November. The unsettling predicament comes just weeks after NASA's final space shuttle flight. ''We have plenty of options,'' NASA's space sta- tion program manager, Mike Suffredini, assured reporters Monday. ''We'll focus on crew safety as we always do.'' Abandoning the space station, even for a short peri- od, would be an unpleasant last resort for the world's five space agencies that have spent decades working on the project. Astronauts have been living aboard the space station since 2000, and the goal is to keep it going until 2020.
