2 THELAMBDA LETTER Kurt Chessman '15, Joe Grozier '17, Sam Luebbe '16, and Alex Davenport '16 discuss plans for the basement renovation. Tom Temelkoff '16 puts up painter's tape in the Bloomington Salvation Army. Peter Kolb '17 and Kyle Messer '17 refresh the interior of the local Salvation Army thrift store. Lambda Earns sEcond PEtErson significant chaPtEr award New Scholarship, Philanthropy Endeavors T he Lambda Chapter is proud to report that in recognition of another successful year, we were awarded our second Peterson Significant Chapter Award in two years. After a smooth transition from past leadership, Consul Luke Harris '15 drove the continued success of Sigma Chi at IU, with the help of Pro Consul Christian Bowers '15 and Annotator Spencer Hays '15. As we begin a new school year, we are looking to build upon past achievements and are striving to obtain the Peterson Significant Chapter Gold Award. THANK YOU, JIM DYE '53 We started the year with a strong sense of initiative from both undergraduate brothers and alumni. Alumni Relations Chairman Henry Curless '17 led a fundraising initiative to refurbish our basement and furnish our new common room that was built over the summer. Additionally, through an outstanding act of kindness and commitment to Sigma Chi, James W. Dye '53 established a new $4,000 scholarship for the Consuls of Lambda. Both the Chapter and I are humbled and excited to accept such a generous donation. We are planning an event to show our appreciation to Jim for the new scholarship. NEW SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE We ended the spring semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.11. We recognize that there room for improvement in academics, and our scholarship team has a program aimed on increasing the Chapter GPA. The initiative is a mentoring program in which our new pledge class is grouped together with a scholarship chairman with the objective of ensuring the new members have a smooth transition into college. FACEOFF FOR THE FORCES As always, philanthropy is a strong focus of Lambda Chapter this year. We established a relationship with the local Salvation Army by bringing 20 brothers to paint the interior of their thrift store on the first Sunday of the semester. Additionally, we are looking forward to participating in a new philanthropy with three other fraternities called Faceoff for the Forces. This philanthropy is similar to our Dropping the Puck on Cancer event, but instead of hockey we will be playing a lacrosse game with the proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warriors Project. WELCOMING, 30 NEW BROTHERS After a successful fall recruitment, Lambda decided on 30 strong candidates to pledge for the fall. We foresee a lot of potential in the new pledge class to be worthy brothers of Sigma Chi and also significant assets toward the advancement of the Chapter. CAMPUS LEADERSHIP ENCOURAGED We continually stress the importance of both Chapter and campus involvement. Quinn Rusnak '16 has shown an outstanding dedication to Lambda by serving as house manager, risk manager, and is a bike team rider. Samuel Luebbe '16 is on the executive council of IU Dance Marathon as the director of dancer relations, and William Wartenberg '15 is the vice president of congress within the IU Student Association. Lambda Chapter is proud of our recent accomplishments and is looking forward to another great year. We encourage alumni support and input in all that we do, so please feel free to reach out to us.
