THE LAMBDA LETTER FALL 2014 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER OF THE LAMBDA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI INSIDE: 2 Lambda Earns Peterson Significant Chapter Award n 3 New Members n 4 A Life of John Wooden Lambda Corporation Finishes Summer Maintenance Alumni, Come to Bloomington! T he summer months were again a time to return the house to top condition. The fall semester started with the Chapter House nearly at capacity and in great condition when the active members returned in August. Mom Cheryl Pate continues to do a great job as house director. During the summer months her job is to make sure the house is put back to the appearance and functionality that it was when the year started. Summer maintenance included tuckpointing of our exterior limestone and cleaning and polishing all of our hard surface flooring. The flooring that was completed over the last three years has continued to be durable and maintains its appearance. The parking lot was resealed, lines were painted, and the trees lining the lot were trimmed. We upgraded the appearance of the back patio area by removing all of the dying plants and replaced them with hard surfaces that gave a much cleaner appearance. We also addressed our technology by updating the wireless Internet system to improve the speed and connection. The camera security system was also upgraded, which will provide better outside images to help with security and vandalism. Lambda Chapter has a new live-in advisor this year. Luke Harris '15 was consul last year and has stepped up to this new position. We have found this to be a good positon for a past consul. It helps with communication and allows him to advise the leadership. When you are in Bloomington I encourage you to stop by the Chapter House. I think you will be amazed at the condition of the house and the caliber of young men in Lambda Chapter. In Hoc, Doug Morrow '74 Lambda Corporation President (260) 925-5356 dcmorrow@ctlnet.com ENCOURAGING SCHOLARSHIP ACROSS THE STATE Why James W. Dye '53 Gives Back T he pursuit of knowledge and wisdom is unending and few understand this concept better than the men of Sigma Chi. James W. Dye '53 believes his fraternity experience taught him to foster an environment which promotes excellence, growth, mentorship, and knowledge. More than 20 years ago, Jim and his wife, Betty, started a scholarship foundation for high school students in Northwest Indiana. Since then, they have awarded more than 500 academic scholarships to students who seek opportunities in higher education. Jim and Betty chose to start a scholarship foundation because they wanted to improve the quality of life for all the residents of Northwest Indiana and the state of Indiana. This year they extended the scholarship program to Lambda Chapter by awarding the Consuls of Lambda with a $4,000 scholarship. Lambda Chapter provided Jim with a good education and lifelong friendships. "The general pride and morality from Sigma Chi and good living experience with other intelligent fraternity brothers were great educational and meaningful experiences on their own. Those friendships have lasted through my life, and this month I will be 83 years old." While he was an undergraduate, Jim earned a degree in real estate in the school of business. He served as social chairman in Lambda Chapter and was the basketball team manager from 1949 to 1952. Jim says his favorite memories from college are when IU beat Notre Dame in football in 1950, when he was in charge of student spirit for the Union Board, and when IU won the NCAA basketball championship in 1953. After graduation Jim was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers and lived in Japan for more than a year. His career expanded from real estate and development to working in lumber, apartment construction, design, management, farming, and investing. Jim served as an Indiana University trustee from 1984 to 1990. In 1992, he and Betty started the Entrepreneurship Seminar Series that still goes on today. Giving back to the school and fraternity has always been important for Jim. He admires John D. Peterson '55 and what he does for the national fraternity in his continuing efforts and endeavors to make us stronger. If you would like to reach out to Jim, you may contact him via e-mail at jamesdye@comcast.net. About the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation T he James W. and Betty Dye Foundation was established to provide tuition scholarships for qualified high school graduates at selected high schools in northwest Indiana. Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors to recognize academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and future potential. The awards are for students attending Indiana state universities. Of special interest to the James W. and Betty Dye Foundation is the economic development and general welfare of northwest Indiana. The foundation believes a better educated population will enhance the quality of life for all its citizens. Some of the ideals of the foundation will be realized if those who benefitted from the scholarship program live and work in northwest Indiana following graduation from college.
