Alumni EngAgEmEnt grows At Epsilon KAppA Your Participation Multiplies Our Success The WISE OLD OWL Epsilon KAppA ChAptEr of sigmA Chi frAtErnity At thE univErsity of mEmphis Fall 2014 FEATURES: Epsilon Kappa Celebrates 60th 2 • President's Corner 3 • Alumni Update 3 I t has been a very busy and rewarding summer for Epsilon Kappa. The Chapter earned its 10th Peterson Award out of the last 11 years and your House Corporation won its seventh straight Outstanding House Corporation Gold Medal. These are but two awards of many, both national and at U of M, but the most rewarding thing to me is the growing involvement of so many Epsilon Kappa alumni. SUCCESSFUL SWEETHEART BALL In August, we hosted a hugely successful Sweetheart Ball, celebrating 60 years of Epsilon Kappa, 10 years in our present Chapter House, and the outstanding service of Brother Tom McAdams, Vanderbilt '57 to our Chapter and the West Tennessee Province. Many have told me it was the best Epsilon Kappa social event they can remember. There are several more opportunities ahead to be involved socially, so turn to page 4 for those event announcements. SECURING THE FUTURE OF EPSILON KAPPA After a lot of discussion and some early commitments, we have decided that the time is right to celebrate our past in the best possible way, and that is by acting to secure the future of Epsilon Kappa Sigs. All it takes is the participation of all of us, whether that participation is small, large, or in between. Coming together under the bonds of our brotherhood will not only help the active Chapter, it will make your own life richer. Just ask an involved alumnus. We have some exciting proposals for the future. I would like to sincerely thank the growing number of alumni working to make all this happen, as we help support what is arguably the best chapter in Sigma Chi—not because we say so, but because so many others say so. I hope to see many of you this year. I'm very proud of my brothers, and, as always, I am so proud to be a Sigma Chi. In Hoc, Don Wilson '68 President, Memphis Sigma Chi Housing Group Inc. dwilson987@comcast.net Brothers close the program at the 60th anniversary celebration by serenading the past Epsilon Kappa Sweethearts in attendance. See More Details of the 60th Anniversary Inside! A Sigma Chi Through and Through Spotlight on Chris Boysen '90 I t wasn't until his junior year at Memphis that Chris Boysen '90 decided to join Sigma Chi. Attending a recruitment event with buddies from high school, he pledged later that same day. Chris claims that it was the best decision he had made up until that point of his life and quickly deepened his ties with the Chapter, serving as pro consul in 1989 and consul in 1990. As an alumnus, he served as Chapter Advisor from 1997 to 2004 and on the Housing Corporation from 2000 to 2009. The Sigma Chi memories are many, but for Chris, initiation and I-week will always be highlights. He still remembers the moments of that week and will for the rest of his life. He also appreciated his time as advisor and the opportunity to help the Chapter get through the house burning and probation. He was a key part in getting the new house built and guided the undergraduate brothers in building leadership qualities. (Continued on page 3) Epsilon Kappa announcEs Legacy of exceLLence capital campaign T he Legacy of Excellence Capital Campaign was announced at the 60th Anniversary Sweetheart Ball in August, and we are off to an outstanding start with $106,000 raised of the $200,000 goal. This campaign will accommodate the first addition to the property since it was purchased in 1961 and will allow us to renovate areas of the chapter house, which is now 10 years old. Special thanks to Jeff Garrety '71, Bill Fulton '67, Adam Britt '03, Stephen Evers '95 Family, and Gary Grear '69 for their early commitments to get us started. You will receive more information in the coming weeks to see how you can be a part of this project.
