SIGMA PHI EPSILON Q&A with JUstin MAyfield '05 What is your current position and what do you do specifically? I am vice president and treasurer at Ligon Industries LLC. I'm responsible for daily cash management, investments, and directing the 401(k) and pension plans for Ligon's portfolio companies. How, if at all, did being a SigEp impact your career path? As chapter president, I learned valuable leadership skills that were instrumental in the management positions I have held. Have you had a chance to get back to campus or the Chapter House lately? Are you surprised by how things have changed? There have been incredible changes to both campus and the Fraternity in the last nine years. I would say both are looking up. What is your impression of the active Chapter? They are very strong and have a dedicated executive board that is committed to making SigEp the best fraternity on campus. Justin and his wife, Suzanne, live in Hoover, Alabama. You can contact him at mayfield.justin@gmail.com. Alumni Day Held at "New" House T he Chapter hosted a very successful Alumni Day on Saturday, September 20, the day of the Alabama-Florida football game. More than 20 alumni from across the country came by the house for lunch with the undergraduates, many of whom also attended the AVC board meeting held prior to lunch. John Jones '92 traveled all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to participate in the day's events (accompanied by his lovely 10-year-old daughter, Lauren). Alumni were glad to see the Chapter back on campus and enjoyed visiting with officers and other undergraduates, including the 48 newly recruited members. They were also excited to learn that the Chapter's total manpower is now at 118. Chapter President Jeffrey Collins '15 updated alumni on the status of the Chapter, including the successful move into the house in late August. Alabama Beta's cumulative GPA at the end of last semester was 3.48, the highest of all fraternities on campus. This outstanding GPA secures SigEp the best student seating location for all Alabama home football games. A great buffet lunch of barbecue chicken, grilled bratwurst, potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw was served to undergraduates, their dates, and alumni. A collection of numerous framed fraternity composites from past years is on display in the dining room, many of which had been in storage and will be hung on the walls of the Chapter's living room. A special thank-you goes to Brother Leon Badali '84 as he was instrumental in safeguarding the Chapter's composites from the old house after it was shut down. Brother Badali delivered the Chapter composites to the SigEp swing house on September 19 prior to the alumni get-together and annual board meeting. All alumni and undergraduates were inspired with having elements of our history back on campus. The undergraduate Chapter will get the composites professionally cleaned and installed in the house. During the AVC meeting, plans were reviewed for the move into a permanent house (the current KA house) in the fall of 2016. Future alumni events including a second golf outing in the spring of 2015 (be on the lookout for further details later this year) were also discussed. Based upon current information, a rechartering gala is tentatively planned for January/February 2015. It was also announced that beginning with this issue, the Red Door newsletter will be available both on the Chapter's website (alabamasigep.com) and the alumni Facebook page [Sigma Phi Epsilon Alabama Beta Alumni (UA SPE Chapter)]. In accordance with the AVC's articles of incorporation, an election was held for the AVC board positions. No nominations had been received in response to previously published requests and no nominations were made by those alumni in attendance. Consequently, the current slate of officers was reelected for another year's term. It is anticipated—and hoped—that there will be other alumni willing to step forward and serve on the board in time for the 2015 elections. If you plan to be on campus for any football games this fall, please drop by the house and meet the members. Fraternally, Sam Sparks '71 Alumni Day was a great success with Alabama Betas from far and near in attendance. Henry V. Lewis Jr. '49 retired in 1988 from General Dynamics as an engineering specialist, space division. He previously worked for Hughes Aircraft in communications. Henry remains active in church, follows Alabama football ("Roll Tide!"), and the stock market. He and his wife, Betty, live in Escondido, Calif. E-mail: lewhb50@gmail.com J. Linwood Keith '61 is getting ready to retire. He lives in Decatur, Ga., with his wife, Dot, and their two children. E-mail: james8220@comcast.net David M. Huggins '80 has practiced law for over 30 years, specifically in corporate and personal litigation. David lives in Spanish Fort, Ala., with his wife, Deann, and has three grown children.
