THE RED DOOR THANK YOU, LOYAL BROTHERS T he only source of funds available to the AVC board to carry on its activities and to support the undergraduates through scholarships is the contributions from alumni. The alumni have the following funds to which they can contribute: • AVC Board – Funds are used to pay expenses of the AVC and assist the Chapter in specific needs. • Sigma Phi Epsilon Foundation Discretionary Scholarship Fund* – These funds are used at the discretion of the AVC to provide financial support to undergraduates. • Sigma Phi Epsilon Foundation Fixed Scholarship Fund* – This fund's purpose is to create an endowment. Therefore, the amount of the distributions annually is restricted. We encourage all alumni to support our Chapter through a gift to one of these funds. A very special thank-you goes to the following alumni who contributed to our spring 2014 appeal. Robert R. Pope '57 Pat Meyer '65 Wayne Richardson '65 Ernest A. Fite '68 Wynn C. Echols '69 John R. Elliott '69 Bob Holman '69 James W. Parker '69 Michael Symms '69 Gene Boles '70 Jon P. Worrell '70 Mark S. Hierbaum '71 Paul T. Johnson '71 Steve A. This inaugural get-together included alumni from the greater Huntsville area, as well as other cities in northern Alabama. Those attending were Dr. Darryl Britt '61 of Scottsboro; Dr. Ray Fambrough '68, Gary Conchin '76, and Neal West '90 of Huntsville; and Hal Kennamer '71 of Guntersville. Clyde Mackey '73 of Dallas, Texas, (originally from Huntsville) was in town and joined the group for dinner. Jonathan Worrell '70 also drove in from Atlanta to attend the meeting and to catch up with Hal, Ray, and Clyde. Mark Salmon '87, Steve Mace '71, and Sam Sparks '71 were on hand from Birmingham to represent the AVC board. As AVC president, Mark updated the group on the latest Chapter accomplishments and the status of moving into a fraternity house for the fall semester. Brother Britt was presented with a ducal crown alumni lapel pin for his being the most senior alumnus present. Based on input from those in attendance, and because of the significant number of Alabama Beta alumni in the northern Alabama area, it was decided that other such meetings will be planned for the future. In fact, with more than 40 Alabama Beta alumni residing in north Alabama, several alumni are working to organize periodic meetings in Huntsville. If you live in the area and are interested in learning more, please contact Neal West at neal.west@us.army.mil. ATLANTA For the second consecutive year, Alabama Beta alumni gathered in Atlanta prior to the Chik-fil-A Kickoff Game. This year's function was held on Friday, August 29, the day before the Tide's matchup with West Virginia. Atlanta-area alumni, as well as some who were in town for the game, met at the new Dantanna's Tavern in Sandy Springs. Everyone was updated on the Chapter's successful move into the temporary swing house on New Fraternity Row and their academic accomplishments and current manpower. Alumni attending were Rick Daigneault '82, who traveled from Houston, Texas, J. Linwood Keith '62, Jim Mock '82, Mickey Johnson '82, Sig Symms '69, Ted Lester '70, Jonathan Worrell '70, and Sam Sparks '71. Linwood was presented with a print of the old house for his being the most senior alumnus in attendance (which he plans to frame and hang in his study). Several alumni's wives also were on hand to maintain control. A great time was had by all and we hope to continue the tradition next year!
