There have been many activities completed since our last communication. • The undergraduate Chapter has moved into the old Sigma Chi house on new row. They are adjusting to being in a house while living and eating with brothers on a daily basis. • The cumulative GPA for the spring '14 term was 3.48, which is .01 better than fall '13. • Membership increased by 48 new members for a net brotherhood of 118 men. • A parent organization has been developed for the undergraduate members. A member of the parent organization has been invited to be a non-voting member of the AVC board. For this school year, Wanda Morpeth will be the representative between the groups and we welcome her participation. • The annual board meeting was held on September 20, 2014. The AVC board was re-elected to their previous roles, and I would like to commend them for their efforts on our behalf. We would like to see more alumni involved with the organization. If you are interested in volunteering please contact me. • The undergraduate executive members are making difficult decisions in order to protect the longevity of the organization. • You will receive phone calls from members of the undergraduate Chapter in order to confirm or update your contact information. Please provide them with your information and indicate whether you prefer to get communications via hard copy or electronically. • Information regarding chartering will be forthcoming and we expect to have a tremendous celebration in the first quarter of 2015. All alumni are invited to this event. Please share with your AVC any aspects of the Fraternity that you find informative. Also, take some time to update your information by going to www.alabamasigep.com and clicking on the alumni link. We appreciate your help maintaining our records to keep you informed about Alabama Beta. Fraternally, Mark Salmon '87 AVC President The Balanced Man PrograM E ducation and experience are valuable benefits that a fraternity can offer its undergraduate members. A program designed to provide a balanced experience to all undergraduates was implemented to help prevent many of the problems that plague fraternities. In accordance with 1991 Grand Chapter resolutions #36, "To affirm service as a key component in the undergraduate experience," and #37, "To transform the pledging process from that of proving worthiness to one of achievement in the chapter and community," a committee was formed to undertake the Balanced Man project. The goal of the committee is to create a functional yet fun development program. This program was piloted first at Dartmouth College and implemented in the fall of 1992 in Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters. It's not just a new pledge program but an enhancement of the three- year membership experience to which Sigma Phi Epsilon is committed. Key components of the program: • The Balanced Man journey is a progression of challenges to emphasize continued individual achievement program. • Personal development through challenging community service projects. • Developing more and better relationships between brothers, alumni, and members of the community by the creation of a mentor system. • Removing personal servitude and second-class citizenship from the chapter's culture. • Incorporating action-oriented learning into the chapter experience for all members (team building activities, etc.). • Creating a greater opportunity for one-on-one alumni involvement and contact. • Promoting academic success by setting standards and establishing written goals each semester for every member. We are glad to bring this program to the men of Alabama Beta and know that it will help ensure the longevity of our Chapter at The University of Alabama.
