THE TOMAHAWK Theta Chi at ISU 3 Alumni Relations Chairman to Create Connections between Collegians and Alumni T o increase communication with alumni, Alpha Mu has created an alumni relations chairman position, filled by undergraduate leader Dillon Bechtol '17. "My chief duty is to increase communication with our alumni, put a face to our undergraduate chapter, assist Jon Fleming '75 with planning and executing alumni activities, and keep alumni up-to-date with undergraduate activities." Dillon knows this role is important because without alumni, Alpha Mu would not be where it is today. "I believe it is essential to keep our alumni involved and informed with what we have going on and are achieving." Dillon feels it is vital alumni know about events like alumni weekend, undergraduate philanthropy events, and initiation, so they can show their support and Alpha Mu can continue to grow. Creating a more tight-knit Alpha Mu will allow alumni to see first-hand how their support has helped. One important way alumni can support the undergraduate chapter is through the funding of scholarships. "Scholarships are given out to new members, the brother with the highest G.P.A., and the most improved G.P.A. Since these scholarships are sponsored in large part by our alumni, the more our alumni are able to give, the more we are able to support our undergraduate members with these scholarships." Dillon knows first-hand the effect an alumni-funded scholarship can have. As a highly accomplished student, an Alpha Mu scholarship is helping Dillon pursue his degree in communication and international studies, a minor in Russian language, and a certificate in leadership and community development, all while being involved in the honors program. He has attended the Mid-Year Leadership Conference, national convention, and Initiative Academy for Theta Chi, all on behalf of the Alpha Mu chapter. "My favorite part of this position is my ability to network with and get to know various alumni. I love every opportunity I have to learn about how Theta Chi impacted their life and hear stories about their time as an undergraduate member." If you have any thoughts, ideas, or concerns, please contact Dillon at bechtol@iastate.edu. New Graduate Assistant Aims to Help Theta Chi Achieve Goals W hen Justin Meyers interviewed Iowa State fraternities to find a good fit for his role as graduate assistant, one fraternity stuck out: Theta Chi. "They were extremely passionate about their fraternity and strove to become better. I was impressed by their improvement each year and their plans to become even more successful this year. I felt with my leadership abilities and interest in helping student leaders on campus, I would be a great fit for this position." Justin comes to Ames by way of Grand View University in Des Moines and his hometown of West Liberty, Iowa. Although Grand View did not have a Greek system, Justin stayed highly involved in student leadership while earning his businesses administration degree with a concentration in management. As graduate advisor, Justin will provide advising on achieving community and chapter-specific roles in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and philanthropy while developing interpersonal relationships with the chapter members and providing connections to different departments at Iowa State. Due to Theta Chi's extreme passion for making Alpha Mu the best fraternity on campus, Justin is confident that the Alpha Mu brothers will achieve their goals this year, which include establishing a strong sense of brotherhood, exceeding the G.P.A. requirement, becoming more recognized in the Ames community, and growing membership. Justin has been impressed with how involved the members have been on campus and whole-heartedly believes "the brothers of Theta Chi will be successful in their college careers and become leaders in our society" after they graduate. Justin enjoys being outdoors, staying active, and spending time with family. Get in touch with Justin via e-mail at adm_jmeyers@ iastate.edu.
