Ted Hovda '73 Thankful for Theta Chi's Impact on His Life E very time I return to Ames I think back to the spring of 1969 when I was about to graduate from high school. I had made the decision to attend Iowa State, but I had no knowledge about the Greek system. I received a lot of mail from different fraternities and decided to visit some that spring. The best fit for me was Theta Chi and I pledged in the fall. I have never had any second thoughts and many things have happened in my life as a result of my decision. I met my wife of 41 years at the wedding reception of Dan Brown '71. Susie and I have had a great life, enjoyed raising three children, and now enjoy four grandchildren. We may never have met if not for Theta Chi. I served as undergraduate treasurer and learned how to manage money. Brother Mark Benda '73 was president that year and we faced some difficult issues. I learned how to approach problems from all perspectives and the executive council resolved the problems. That experience has helped me in life as well. I agreed to serve on the board of directors in 1980 and things went well for many years. Then a fire destroyed our fraternity house and our existence as a chapter was threatened. The board had to decide how to continue our presence on campus. With the help of our generous alumni we rebuilt our fraternity house. The recruitment efforts since last spring have filled the house and our membership is the largest it has been since the fire. In the next decade we will celebrate 100 years as a fraternity on the Iowa State campus. All brothers owe our Theta Chi experience to the founders who had the foresight to start the Mohawk Club and later affiliate with Theta Chi Fraternity. Their efforts made a huge and lasting impact on my life.
