Tri Delta Sisters Take On Design of Delta Mu Home T he transformation of the Tri Delta House was an effort orchestrated by women from all generations and locations around the country. But, close to home, in Alabama, members of the design committee—MarLa Stephenson Sayers '57, Karen Outlaw Atchison '73, Emily Patton '81, Kimberly Lee Bean '80, Tricia Downs Stone '83, and collegiate representative Merrit Cowden '08—quietly worked their magic to help design the interior and exterior spaces of the new house. The team spent a year meeting monthly with the project's architects and from there, Karen and Kimberly took on the inside of the house, from interior finishes to furniture, fabrics, fixtures, rugs, and accessories. Both Karen and Kimberly earned interior design degrees from the University of Alabama and have worked for many years in the field. For both women, Tri Delta had been a group they could come home to and identify with in the midst of a large campus. For Kimberly, having sisters going through the same major provided an extra support system. "I have very fond memories of staying up all night in the basement with the other interior design girls before a big project was due!" While designing the home for future generations of Delta Mu women wasn't on their minds during undergraduate days, both answered the call when it came. "When Tricia Stone came to Mobile to share the idea of a new house, I went to the meeting," said Karen. "She was looking for a Mobile representative to join the design committee. It was an ambitious project and turned out to be a terrific experience. I made new friends and learned so much." "In the early meetings with the architects," said Kimberly, "we really tried to see how we wanted the house to work for the girls. It was a great process because really and truly, the layout of the house does seem to work very well. There are girls all over that house, from the newest pledge to the senior who is about to graduate." "We were really happy with the end result," said Karen. "I think we created the kind of inviting atmosphere that we wanted it to be—appropriately elegant, yet comfortable and inviting." For both women, being involved in the Chapter again as alumnae has been a rewarding experience—a chance to see the young women living in the house today and reflect on what past alumnae have done for Delta Mu. "When I was in school I knew there were alumnae helping with everything from House Corporation duties to game day flowers," said Kimberly. "Now, as an active alumna, I'm so grateful for the many tasks they took care of behind the scenes that we didn't even realize." "I think it's good for the undergraduates to see who came before them," said Karen. "Being involved in this project created a full circle as I remembered what it was like when we were collegians." Kimberly and her husband, Nelson, live in Mountain Brook and have three children: Elizabeth, Nelson, and Chapman. Karen and her husband, Jim, live in Mobile, and share four sons and three granddaughters in their blended family. Kimberly Lee Bean '80 Karen Outlaw Atchison '73 f 8 *
