Harbaugh dismissed reports Sunday that Gore is unhappy with negotiations, calling it ''water-cooler talk.'' ''No, I don't sense unhappi- ness in Frank,'' Harbaugh said in a conference call on the heels of a 17-3 exhibition victory over the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night. ''... Reports, conversations, talking points, things you're ask- ing me, it all is and sounds like water-cooler talk to me. I'm not interested in it, in the water-cool- er talk. ''I don't think there's any sub- stance to the things you're asking me and the examples that you're citing. We'll deal with Frank man to man and won't listen to the water-cooler talk, so to speak, and deal with Frank and his agent. ''Hopefully soon there's a deal that's fair for Frank and the 49ers. I'm looking forward to that and our organization is.'' The 28-year-old Gore said last week he hopes to get a new long- term deal from the Niners before the Sept. 11 season opener against Seattle. He missed the final five games last season with a fractured right hip sustained in a Monday night game at Arizona on Nov. 29, but insists he is fully healthy now. He avoided surgery after doctors told him he likely could return to form with rehabilitation. Gore begins the year third on the franchise career rushing list. He needs 931 yards to be No. 1, but has said that's not his top pri- ority for a franchise that hasn't reached the playoffs or had a winning season since 2002. Gore, who held out for the first four days of training camp, MCT photo 49ers running back Anthony Dixon (24) runs for a first down in the first quarter against the Raiders on Saturday at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. said last week he hasn't received any word from the team on a potential extension. He spent sev- eral minutes chatting with gener- al manager Trent Baalke at the start of Tuesday's practice. Gore certainly will seek a con- tract comparable to the $43 mil- lion, five-year deal running back DeAngelo Williams — 20 days older than San Francisco's star — recently received from the Car- olina Panthers. That includes $21 million guaranteed. Williams was sidelined for 10 games last year with a sprained right foot. San Francisco rewarded All- Pro linebacker Patrick Willis and tight end Vernon Davis last year before the season started. On the eve of the 2010 opener, Davis signed a five-year exten- sion worth $37 million overall, including $34 million guaranteed — making him the highest-paid tight end in NFL history. In May 2010, Willis received a $50 mil- lion, five-year contract extension NFL exhibition capsules — Week 3 that takes him through the 2016 season and includes $29 million in guaranteed money. He earns $10 million per season. ''I hope they do (reward me),'' Gore said last week. ''If they don't, I'll become a free agent.'' Gore ran for 853 yards and three touchdowns in his sixth NFL season and caught 46 passes for 452 yards and two TDs. Gore's 24 100-yard rushing games are the most in 49ers his- tory. Sandoval's 2-run homer lifts Giants over Astros HOUSTON (AP) — The San Francisco Giants had several good chances to beat the Houston Astros. It took them until the 11th inning to find one that worked. Pablo Sandoval hit a tie-breaking two- run homer with two out in the 11th inning to lead the Giants to a 6-4 victory Sunday. The score had been tied 4-4 since the fourth inning and the Giants missed a few opportunities to take the lead until San- doval's 15th homer off Mark Melancon (6- 4). It's been tough for the Giants lately. They've lost 17 of their last 23 games. The Astros made two outstanding defensive plays to keep the score tied. ''It's frustrating, especially when you've been in a streak like we've been in and lost two straight here,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You're hoping that somebody comes through but they made two unbeliev- able defensive plays that saved them. It was a great job on their part.'' Chargers 20, Cowboys 7 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tony Romo was sharp. Philip Rivers was sharper. And the most accurate guy of all was San Diego coach Norv Turner. Rivers led San Diego to scores on two of three drives, then Turner earned his club score another touchdown with two successful challenges on a single series in the Chargers' 20-7 preseason vic- tory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Rivers went 8 of 11 for 92 yards, with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Randy McMichael. Romo was 8 of 12 for 58 yards, with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten. Romo also threw an interception on an ill-advised pass. Turner got an interception by Billy Volek over- turned, and got a touchdown for Ryan Mathews on a play officials declared him out of bounds inside the 1. Jets 27, Bengals 7 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Plaxico Burress caught three passes for 66 yards, includ- ing an over-the-shoulder 26-yarder for a touch- down, in his first game in nearly three years to help the New York Jets beat the Cincinnati Ben- gals 27-7 in a preseason game Sunday night. Burress, signed last month after serving 20 months in prison on a gun charge, made his debut with the Jets (1-1) a memorable one. He caught a 20-yard pass from Mark Sanchez on the Jets' first offensive play and another 20-yard grab in the second quarter, but the highlight came on New York's last offensive play of the first half. Burress took off down the left sideline, drew separation from defensive back Fred Bennett and hauled in a pass from Sanchez and fell into the end zone to put New York up 17-7. Sanchez finished 12 of 20 for 173 yards and two touchdowns, the first to Santonio Holmes, as the Jets' starting offense played the entire first half. The running game, without starter Shonn Greene, stalled during the first two quarters, gain- ing just 17 yards, as a driving rain fell at the New Meadowlands Stadium. LaDainian Tomlinson had just 16 yards on nine carries. See NFL, page 2B was pleased to get it over. ''I'm tired,'' Sandoval said. ''I just was looking for a pitch to hit. Now we go home, got a day off and come Tuesday, play hard. I've been hurting so I'll enjoy that day. I just want to play and help team win a game.'' Jeremy Affeldt (2-2) pitched two innings for the victory. He has allowed one earned in 17 1-3 innings since the All-Star break. The Giants left 12 base runners stranded, including seven over the final five innings. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Astros, equaling their longest of the season. Brandon Belt hit a three-run homer in the second inning and had a career high four hits. The Astros kept coming up with big defensive plays to keep the score tied. ''I thought our guys did a great job of battling all the way until the end,'' Astros manager Brad Mills said. ''It seemed like the leadoff guy got on in every inning. Our guys had to really buckle down and work out of jams, and they did. There were a lot of quality pitches being made.'' The Giants were poised to take the lead in the eighth with the bases loaded and one out. Instead, Chris Stewart hit a fly to left fielder J.D. Martinez, who caught it for the second out and then made a perfect throw to See GIANTS, page 2B
