Defense attorney Rolland Pa- pendick entered the not guilty plea on Tyler Burrone's behalf at Tehama County Superior Court. Judge Matt McGlynn scheduled a pretrial conference for Dec. 15. Burrone has been accused of texting in the moments before he rear-ended a Nissan Maxima, forcing it into the path of an on- coming big rig on State Route 99E near Sherman Street. The Nissan's driver, Katie Ramsey, was seriously injured in the July 24, 2013 wreck. Her son, Gunner, was killed. During a preliminary hear- ing in August, a California High- way Patrol officer testified that no evidence was found that Bur- rone had applied the brakes of his Ford F-250 pickup before striking the Nissan, which was slowed or stopped at the time. Additionally, the officer, James Keffer, who also walked through Burrone's phone records in the moments before the crash, said a witness reportedly saw Burrone holding a device above his steer- ing wheel before the wreck. McGlynn at the time deter- mined there was enough evidence to hold Burrone, a California State University, Chico student who was 22 at the time of the incident, to an- swer to the vehicular manslaugh- ter charge. The defendant, who was present in court Tuesday, remains out of custody after having his $20,000 bail posted.
