Bev Howard, Kelly Jackson, Angie Weir Miller and Doug Dreier were inducted into the Spartan Hall of Fame during a ceremony held at the Red Bluff Community-Senior Center. Howard, who won dozens upon dozens of championships as a girls athletics coach, was inducted by her teaching peer Laird Richards. Howard began coaching be- fore Title IX put girls sports on equal terms with boys athletics, back when the Lady Spartans were known as the Spartanettes. Richards estimated Howard won around 250 games during her time as a coach of softball, volleyball and basketball and had a winning percentage that hovered around 90 percent. "Bev's influence in Red Bluff High School sports created the successful environment that I believe we have today in our girls' athletic programs," Rich- ards said. Howard said she believes she was born to coach. "It's one of those things that you love to do," she said. Howard thanked the numer- ous people in attendance. They find some way to win, and on Tuesday it was another strange one. Randy Choate threw Gregor Blanco's sacrifice bunt down the right-field line in the 10th inning and Brandon Crawford raced home, clinching a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Car- dinals in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series. The Giants lead the series 2-1 af- ter becoming the first National League team to win a postseason game on a walk-off error since Bill Buckner's famous flub in the 1986 World Series. Corning's Tucker Hammons was fourth at 13.82 seconds. Corn- ing's Kristen Loverin was seventh and Red Bluff's Cara Hencratt was eighth. Bean also picked up a win in goat tying with a time of 16.85 seconds. Red Bluff's Mackenzie Moore was fourth. Cottonwood's Nicole Tomasello was 10th. Bean picked up a third win in girls cutting with a score of 138. Hencratt was third and Cot- tonwood's Taylor Renihan was fourth. Red Bluff's Mikayla Moore won pole pending in 44.171 seconds. Cottonwood's Jayden Byrne was third at 45.911. Loverin was fourth followed by Cottonwood's Tomasello and Sabrina Cantu. Mi- kayla Moore was 10th. Central Point, Oregon's Malela Memmott won barrel racing with a time of 35.966 seconds. Mikayla Moore was third in 36.634 seconds. Bean was fourth at 36.681 seconds. Corning's Gi- anna Esteve was fifth at 36.695 seconds and Cottonwood's Erin Clendenen was seventh at 36.775 seconds. Anderson's Kolby Bravos won tie down roping at 24.95 seconds. Spencer was fourth at 39.66. Red Bluff's Casey Moore and Kolton King took ninth and 10th. In team roping Bravos and Es- parto's Clayton Bacon won with a time of 15.96 seconds. Spencer and Cottonwood's Cameron Jones placed fifth. Bean and McArthur's Amy Brown were seventh. Hammons placed 10th. Alvernaz won boys cutting with a score of 144. Witter Spring's Brushton Min- ton won steer wrestling. Bodie Vaughan, of Dorris, won bull riding with a score of 81. The next rodeo is Nov. 7-9 in Cottonwood. The Lady Cardinal goalies com- bined to make 12 saves. Concepcion Paz had a strong game for Corning in the loss. "From the moment (she) touched the ball I knew she was going to have a good game," coach Teresa Lamb said. Kobye Rezendes led Corning in shots. Kaitlin Cox had a strong game rushing on short corners to pre- vent Chico drives. "Even through tough times we Lady Cards persevere," Maricruz O'Campo said. Corning hosts Yuba City at 4:45 p.m. today.
