It is published now because the author believes the material is always appro- priate. Aswecelebrateanother 4th of July, I bow my head in thanks to God for the blessings He has poured out on my family and friends in this land called America. But as I lift my head, it moves from side to side in apprehension as I pray to the Lord of the na- tions for continued mer- cies. A newly-released movie in the North State titled America puts forth the no- tion that America's his- tory is being replaced by another version in which faith in God and benevo- lence are absent and plun- der and exploitation are the defining characteris- tics of our nation. Dinesh D'Souza, the director of the film, warns that the way the children of this nation understand the past will determine her fu- ture. As I watch the people of our nation move away from the belief that there is an Absolute Being, rev- erently called Creator in The Declaration of Inde- pendence, I am disheart- ened. A ray of Biblical moral- ity was shown recently by the Supreme Court as it heard what has been called the Hobby Lobby case. In a landmark case, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of religious lib- erty, specifically in regard to closely held corpora- tions — those with a small number of sharehold- ers and offering no public stock, such as corporations that are family-owned, not operated by boards. Oh, the outcry and lies following the decision by the court. A dissenting jus- tice barely controlled her indignation and a pres- idential hopeful misled, or worse, through her words suggested said rul- ing would be harmful to women, as if they would not now receive other means of birth control or abortion services. The rul- ing means only that they must buy these things for themselves if their em- ployee is conscientiously opposed to providing them as a benefit of employ- ment. The Supreme Court Case was specifically lim- ited to those procedures or drugs that would take the life of a little human being. Fetus is the Latin word for "little one." Thankfully, the First Ar- ticle of our Bill of Rights says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an es- tablishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exer- cise thereof . ." In this rul- ing the right of free ex- ercise was not further eroded by the courts of our land. Clearly, those who framed our Constitution following life under the oppressive government of England, sought to limit the power of government over the lives of its sub- jects, contrary to the view of certain politicians in high office today. But is a day coming in the not-so-distant future when we will respectfully need to disobey the gov- erning authorities as did the Apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ? The Apostles were made to appear before the Su- preme Court of their day because they didn't follow the "strict orders" not to speak of Jesus. To which Peter and the others re- plied, "We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead — whom you had killed by hanging Him on a tree. God exalted Him to His own right hand as Prince and Savior that He might give repen- tance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. We are wit- nesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him," in Acts 5:27-32. The oft-quoted words of the Apostle Paul in Ro- mans 13 regarding obedi- ence to the governing au- thorities have their excep- tions, especially in our nation, which is not ulti- mately governed by a pres- ident nor a congress nor a court, but by the Constitu- tion of the United States. Those who go against this God-respecting Constitu- tion have lost their author- ity to be obeyed. Till then, I am thankful for an America in which a ray of morality still ex- ists, as the majority on the Supreme Court took a step toward maintain- ing the integrity of our re- ligious freedoms inherent in the First Amendment. I am thankful for an Amer- ica that acknowledges and honors our obligations be- fore God ahead of obliga- tions to a secular author- ity. We fought for a free conscience in this country, and we must never give it up, for we too are called to obey God rather than men. This is our spiritual duty much more than it is our civic duty. In July 1982 the Rev. Dal- las Dubke became Pas- tor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Corning where he has served for the past 30 years. A Michigan native, his interests include wres- tling, Judo, chess, moun- tain climbing and biking. He is married with four children. GOD TALK Freedom of faith — 2014 St. Paul Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a Fall Clothing Giveaway 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 11 at the corner of Jefferson and Elm streets in Red Bluff. All in need in the com- munity are welcome to come by the church parking lot to receive men's, wom- en's and children's clothing and shoes. All are welcome and there is no charge. ASSISTANCE Clothing giveaway slated Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY The ex- panding international foot- print of the Mormon church will be on display this week- end during a biannual con- ference that brings 100,000 church members to Salt Lake City to listen to words of guidance and inspiration from the faith's leaders. Thousands of the attend- ees will be coming from countries outside the U.S. — most stopping on their way into the 21,000-seat confer- ence center to grab head- phones so they can listen to speeches translated into 23 different languages. It is widely anticipated that one or more of this weekend's speakers will deliver an address in a lan- guage other than English, marking a first in the his- tory of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' biannual general confer- ence. Church leaders recently announced they would make that option available to speakers. A non-English speech would be an important rep- resentation of the interna- tionalization of a church that was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith in upstate New York, say scholars who study the religion. "It's a hugely important symbol, because it reveals that the religion is becom- ing less and less a small, interesting American sect, and more and more a diverse, global religion," said Matthew Bowman, a Mormon scholar and his- tory professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The number of church members outside the United States first surpassed the number within the coun- try in 1997, and today more than half of the faith's 15 million members reside in non-U.S. countries. This blended style has made Three Bridges an internationally- acclaimed Gospel group — one that is known for tight harmonies, a unique vocal style, an exciting and energy packed stage presence and, most importantly, for spreading the joy of the Good News of Christ. They have entertained and ministered to millions through their recordings, TV appearances and live shows — which is why Three Bridges has quickly become one of the most prominent Gospel groups in Christian music today. Lead and tenor singers were previous members of The Imperials.
