FEATURES Incestuous irritation Dear Annie: I am in my early 50s and have been mar- ried for 34 years. My hus- band is the only man I have ever been with. For years, I put up with his cheat- ing because I was concerned about my chil- dren and our financial future. Now the kids are grown and can take care of themselves. by documenting his treat- ment of you. Call the National Domestic Vio- lence Hotline (thehot- line.org) at 1-800-799- SAFE (1-800-799-7233), and then talk to a lawyer. Dear Annie: I am a 17- Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar year-old girl, and I think there might be something wrong with me. My moods change frequently, sometimes at the drop of a hat. I feel lonely a lot, and little things can drop me into a depression. Recently, I’ve My husband has been with his current lover for almost three years. Initially, I let it go, but then he started treat- ing me even worse than before. He would get angry if I went anywhere, but would never join me, so I stopped going out. Then he cut me off from any access to our money. I now have to ask him for whatever I need, and he gets to decide if I can have it or not. He also told me I can no longer open the mail. I started to check up on him and keep track of his phone calls. It took a while, but I was finally able to get undeniable proof of his affair. This is the part I can’t deal with: His lover is his first cousin. I’m so tired of living like this. I think I know what to do, but would like an objective opinion. I have no friends to ask, so please help me. — Suffering in the South Dear Suffering: Aside from the history of marital infidelity, your husband is also guilty of abuse. Isolating you and controlling all the household money are key indicators. Your children are grown. It’s time to get out of this mess of a marriage. Start Without the slightest felt depressed again and was wondering what I’m sup- posed to do. I’ve never told my parents about this. I once attempted to tell my friends, but they brushed off my pain and focused on their own problems. I don’t know if I should tell my parents. I don’t want them to think I’m crazy or trying to get attention. What do I do? — Detroit, Mich. Dear Detroit: A certain amount of moodiness in teenagers can be attributed to hormonal changes, which are common and no cause for alarm. However, when mood swings lead to severe depres- sion, it can be a problem. Please talk to your parents. Ask them to make an appoint- ment for you to see your doc- tor and discuss your concerns and rule out any serious issues. You also can talk to your school counselor or nurse when classes start up again. Dear Annie: I disagree with your response to ‘‘Numb in Nevada,’’ whose son and daughter-in-law cut off con- tact with the grandchild. ‘‘Numb’’ sounds like a woman with a sense of enti- tlement. knowledge of what the writer’s wrongdoings were or of the conditions placed on reconciliation, you sided with the letter writer. Maybe the son finally has developed some ‘‘spine’’ and is standing up to a mother who clearly feels her economic clout enti- tles her to dominate the daughter-in-law. The whole incident was started because ‘‘Numb’’ ignored a clearly expressed wish that she not show up at the hospital. She sounds like the mother-in-law from hell. — F.G. Dear F.G.: She may be, but she still doesn’t deserve to be cut off from her son and grandchild. The son was the one who invited Mom to see the baby. Mom did not, in fact, see the girlfriend at all or interfere with the bonding process (the original require- ment), so there was no reason for such an extreme reaction. Grandparents sometimes overstep and need to accept boundaries. But the bound- aries should be fair and should not deprive the grand- child of a family member’s love. Cause of facial sweating needs further investigation DEAR DR. GOTT: I am a 66-year-old female taking sim- vastatin, clonazepam, paroxetine, flaxseed capsules, fish oil and cranberry pills. I have had exces- sive facial sweating for years. I saw a der- matologist about a year ago who sug- gested that perhaps the sweating was a side effect of the paroxetine. She suggested I switch to a dif- ferent “family” of antide- pressants without the sweat- ing side effect. I tried mir- tazapine for two months, but the sweating continued and the drug made me a real witch to live with. I could not handle it and switched back to the paroxetine. Mentally I feel great, but my face continues to literally drip whenever I get warm. I don’t know what else to try. I cannot enjoy being outside in the summer, and often my face drips while inside our home or in a store. Do you have any suggestions? DEAR READER: Paroxe- tine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, can certainly cause abnormal sweating, so I believe your dermatologist made a good call in recom- mending a trial switch. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Did you ever go back to her? Was further testing ever done? Were possible causes and treatment options dis- cussed? If not, then return to the dermatologist to continue EUREKA (AP) — Prose- cutors in Northern California have upgraded charges against a woman accused of feeding her son methamphet- amine-laced breast milk to murder, rather than manslaughter. Six-week-old Michael Acosta III was taken to the hospital after he stopped breathing last November and was pronounced dead. Inves- Dr. Peter Gott the search. A single appointment that resulted in one possi- ble cause is not enough. You didn’t improve, so now it is up to you and the physician to work together to determine what is going on. Perhaps you are suffering from hyper- hidrosis, a condition that causes some of the body’s sweat glands to fre- quently or chronically pro- duce too much sweat. It typ- ically affects the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and underarms. It can also affect the head and face, and, sometimes, large areas of the body. Focal hyperhidrosis, which affects the palms, soles and underarms when awake, normally isn’t caused by an underlying condition. It usually begins before age 20. It often runs in families and may have a genetic com- ponent. Generalized hyperhidrosis can affect large areas of the body. It can result from menopausal hot flashes, lym- phoma, medication, leukemia, heart attack, an infectious disease or an over- active thyroid. Treatment depends on the type, severity and cause. These can include prescrip- tion antiperspirants, medica- tion, Botox and surgery. Only you and your physician can determine what course of action to take. DEAR DR. GOTT: What was the recommendation for tigators determined his mother, Maggie Jean Wort- man, had breastfed the child while she had drugs in her system. After a preliminary hear- ing last month, a judge ordered Wortman to stand trial for involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. Humboldt County prose- cutors say evidence intro- toenail fungus — Vaseline or Vicks VapoRub? DEAR READER: Vicks VapoRub. However, generic or store brands (mentholated chest rub) work just as well. Simply trim the nails back as far as possible (without caus- ing pain) and rub the product into the skin all around the nail. Some readers have had success using a product called Miranel as well. This is less messy because it is simply “painted” onto the nail. Other options include white vinegar and Pau D’Ar- co tea soaks. Readers who are interest- ed in learning more can order my Health Reports “Dr. Gott’s Compelling Home Remedies” and “More Compelling Home Reme- dies” by sending a self- addressed, stamped No. 10 envelope and a $2 U.S. check or money order for each report to Dr. Peter Gott, P.O. Box 433, Lakeville, CT 06039. Be sure to mention the title(s), or print an order form from my website’s direct link: www.AskDr- GottMD.com/order_form.pd f. Dr. Peter H. Gott is a retired physician and the author of several books, including “Live Longer, Live Better,” “Dr. Gott’s No Flour, No Sugar Diet” and “Dr. Gott’s No Flour, No Sugar Cookbook,” which are available at most bookstores or online. His website is www.AskDrGottMD.com Mom faces murder charge over meth breast milk duced during that hearing led to the upgraded charges this week. Deputy District Attorney Ben McLaughlin told the Times-Standard of Eureka that Wortman’s recklessness warranted the murder charge. Defense attorney M.C. Bruce says the facts don’t support that. He plans to seek to have the charge reduced.
