And on Saturday, Aug. 13, women in the community will have the opportunity to accessorize to their heart’s content at the Child Advocacy Center’s Puse Sale at Max Abbott Middle School. The sale, which features new, nearly new and gently used purses, features Select Shopping Hours from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a silent auction from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. Admission is $5. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there is no charge for entry. Proceeds from the sale benefi t The Child Advocacy Center and Newspapers In Education. All sales are on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis. Cooperative Extension Honors Angela Shaver, 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent for Cumberland County, recently received a professional-development scholarship and a Search for Excellence Award from N.C. Cooperative Extension. Shaver was honored at the Cooperative Extension’s district conference held in Fayetteville. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service Foundation Search for Excellence Award in Extension Resource Development is sponsored by the North Carolina Grange. The purpose of the award is to promote and identify professional excellence within Cooperative Extension. Shaver received the award for her work in raising more than $750,000 for the Bladen County 4-H Program during the past seven years. For this recognition, Shaver received an $800 professional-development award that she will use to attend the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents Conference this fall. Shaver was the 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent in Bladen County before moving to the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Center in March. Shaver also received the Carolyn Stanley Barnes and George Edward Barnes 4-H Graduate Education Scholarship in the amount of $200. This scholarship is designed to support graduate students who are currently working as a 4-H Extension professional. Shaver will use this scholarship to support her continuing education efforts in earning a graduate certifi cate in youth and family development from N.C. State University. North Carolina Cooperative Extension partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians. Extension serves citizens of the state’s 100 counties and the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, providing education and technical assistance based on research from North Carolina’s land-grant universities, NC State University and NC A&T State University. Extension specializes in agriculture, youth, families, communities, health and the environment by responding to local needs. King Re-elected to National Organization’s Board Cumberland County Commissioner Billy King was re-elected to a two-year term to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Counties (NACo) during NACO’s Annual Conference, which was held July 15-19 in Portland, Ore. King was elected to his third two-year term holding one of three seats earned by North Carolina on the NACo Board. NACo is the only national organization representing county government. The NACo Board of Directors supervises, manages and controls the business and property of the association, determines NACo’s mission as identifi ed by the members and monitors NACo’s success in fulfi lling its mission. Due to his service on the NACo Board, King also becomes a member of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC).
