www.cityoffayetteville.org For those wanting to get a head-start on history classes, visit the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex at 801 Arsenal Ave., the 1897 Poe House at 206 Bradford Ave., the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum at 325 Franklin St. or the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Armory and Museum at 210 Burgess St. You could also take a history tour on the new downtown trolley. Call Bruce Daws at 433-1457 for more information. Almost Back to School Time; Get Ready Downtown! It has been a quick summer for some. Children have played in the pool, had fun outside, gone to summer camp and visited grandparents all summer, but now it is almost time to head back to the books as classes start in Cumberland County in a few weeks. No worries though, Downtown Fayetteville has just what you need to be the best dressed and the best accessorized in the class. Before classes start, though, make sure you have done it all before your all-day free days disappear during the week. If you have not visited the all-new, world-class N.C. Veterans Park, along with the new displays at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, make plans to do so Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Pick up cupcakes at the Cupcake Gallery or other sweet things at The Chocolate Lady, Just Desserts or McDuff’s Tea Room. For those wanting some active things to get your energy out, spend an afternoon at the Double Decker Skatepark at 500 Blount St., one of the largest skate parks in N.C. Or what about climbing walls at the Climbing Place at 436 W. Russell St., painting pottery at Greg’s Art, Pottery and Gifts at 122 Maxwell St., fencing at 207 B Donaldson St. and more. And shopping is a necessity to make sure you are well-prepared for the school year. So Chic Bebe at 120 Hay St. has an array of lunch bags, book bags and more that can be easily monogrammed, as well as back to school items. Holmes Fine Gifts at 132 Hay St. is also stocked with fun accessories, as well as quite a bit of collegiate gear for those heading on to the higher education ranks. And downtown has a huge selection of jewelry, so stop in our stores to pick up the best and sparkliest to stand out. Of course, there are always nights and weekends and most know that downtown is a perfect place to spend those evening hours and breaks. So, after the bell rings, see you downtown!
