AlwAys Anchored pAge 2 G reetings to all Epsilon sisters. It is my pleasure to serve as the current House Corporation president of our Delta Gamma Chapter at the Ohio State University. It's hard to step into 131 East 15th and not be filled with wonderful memories of our collegiate years. We would love for you to share your memories with us. The job of the House Corporation is to maintain the chapter house for our collegians. We have been busy this summer updating the bathrooms on the second and third floors, landscaping, and hiring a new chef. JoAnn Rusk is beginning her third year as the Epsilon house director. We no longer use the term "mom," but she will answer if you call her mom as she is a mother to two grown children. She loves working with college students and believes our Epsilon collegians are a joy to work with and excellent representatives of Delta Gamma. Her sister is the house director at Alpha Chi Omega at OSU, and her good friend is beginning her first year across the street as house director at Pi Beta Phi. Stop in to the chapter house and introduce yourself to JoAnn. You will immediately realize what a gem we have in our home. Tina Clemens is our newest member of the chapter house staff. She is thrilled to be working on campus (OSU is her alma mater too!) and says it feels like she has come home. Like JoAnn, she also loves the energy of working with college students. After a successful career in the business world she followed her passion and went back to school at Columbus Culinary Institute and earned her associate degree in culinary arts. O ne hundred fifty feet up in the southeast tower of Ohio Stadium the Victory Bell rings. The sweet melody sounds for 15 minutes following every home win and 30 minutes for victories over Michigan. The tradition began in 1954 when the Buckeyes beat California. (The bell is a gift from that year's class, as well as the classes of 1943 and 1944.) It was just a year later that Shirley Milburn '54, an undergraduate studying accounting, agreed to a blind date set up by a sorority sister with George Caronis, a recent graduate in business. A lifelong adventure began. Over the years, the couple visited every Big Ten stadium and maintained strong ties to Ohio State. They also discussed ways to show their appreciation to their alma mater. George passed away in 2010, before they finalized a plan, so Shirley moved forward with a fund in their names to keep the bell ringing. How did you stay connected to Ohio State over the years? "I am proud to be the first in my family to go to college, and I served as president of Delta Gamma. In fact, I've been involved with the sorority's executive offices in Upper Arlington and with the Ohio State chapter. George worked as assistant dean of men at Ohio State before going into the insurance business. He received many university and community awards and accolades and was the last nationally elected president of the alumni association. They're now appointed to the position." You recently saw the Victory Bell in person for the first time. What was that like? "I can only describe it as a thrill. I grabbed the rope and didn't realize how strong it was; I was nearly pulled off my feet. I'm pleased that the fund will help keep the Victory Bell in good shape to celebrate and announce many future wins for the Buckeyes." Interview by Terri Stone Article edited for space restrictions is summer the HCB renovated the bathrooms with new toilet stalls, sinks, and showers, and replaced bedroom furniture. If your travels find you near campus, please stop by and introduce yourself to our wonderful staff and chapter members. Stroll through the house, knock on an old bedroom door or two, and experience the flood of memories for yourself!
