3 SIGMA CHI T his spring the Alpha Beta Chapter initiated nine new members, making us one of the largest fraternities on campus. Philanthropy Remains Strong_____________ We were also active in philanthropy, raising over $18,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute during our annual Derby Days. The Huntsman Cancer Foundation matches 25% of our donation, which furthers our total contribution towards cancer research. We will once again be participating in "Movember," an event where brothers go without shaving for the month of November to raise money and awareness for men's prostate health. GPA on the Rise_________________________ Due to a successful academic incentive program, our chapter's average GPA jumped from 3.2 to 3.4, putting us above the all-men's average. As our chapter moves into the fall semester, we hope to continue to improve our average GPA by maintaining and expounding upon current academic incentive programs. Membership Continues to Grow___________ We are excited to welcome a new pledge class after a successful recruitment. On the final day of rush, Alpha Beta hosted its traditional alumni steak dinner. It was great to see alumni in the area come out and share their favorite Sigma Chi experiences with our new members. Join Alpha Beta This Fall________________ Finally, the Alpha Beta Chapter looks forward to the upcoming football season to cheer on our beloved Golden Bears. As always, alumni are welcome to join us for game-day tailgating at our chapter house. The house has undergone a series of major renovations this summer, including the addition of a new bathroom, a revamped kitchen, a new interior paint job, and brand new flooring. Our chapter is excited for another great semester at Cal, and hope to continue learning and growing as we strive to embody the ideals of Sigma Chi. In Hoc, Maxwell Benjamin '15 Consul (425) 241-8201 maxbenj7@berkeley.edu S tan Barnes '22, a San Diego High School graduate, came to UC Berkeley through the recommendation of his football coach, Clarence "Nibs" Price 1912. Nibs encouraged his brightest players to follow his path to Berkeley and play for Coach Andy Smith. After a brief stint in the military during WWI, Stan followed his coach's advice and not only enrolled at Cal, but he also joined Sigma Chi. During his tenure at Berkeley, Stan was a center/tackle on California's "Wonder Teams" of 1920 and 1921. In his junior and senior seasons he played with the Bears in two consecutive Rose Bowls. The 1920 team won the national championship going 9-0, outscoring its opponents 510 to 14. In one of the biggest routs in college football history, the Bears defeated St. Mary's 127-0. In the Rose Bowl, Cal defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 28-0. The Bears were also undefeated and untied in 1921 until they tied Washington & Jefferson 0-0 on a muddy field in the Rose Bowl. During his four years at Berkeley, Stan's cumulative record was 31 wins, four losses, and two ties. After graduation, Stan obtained a law degree and entered the legal profession. He became involved with the California Republican Assembly, a grassroots political organization, and rose within its ranks to become one of the GOP's power brokers in California. He later became a superior court judge in Los Angeles, assistant attorney general during the Eisenhower administration, and eventually a federal appellate court judge and president of the Federal Bar Association. On March 5, 1956, Stan was nominated by President Eisenhower to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 20, and received his commission the next day. Stan assumed senior status on October 31, 1970. Stan was inducted into the Order of Constantine, considered to be the highest honor that the Sigma Chi Fraternity bestows upon one of its members, in 1952 and recognized as a Significant Sig in 1959. He is one of three Alpha Beta alumni in the Order of Constantine and one of eight Alpha Beta Significant Sigs. Stan entered Chapter Eternal on March 5, 1990. A true, dedicated athlete, Stan was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954 (the second Golden Bear to receive such an honor) and was among the first group of inductees at the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986. Stan's Sigma Chi membership was an integral part of his life at Cal, and Alpha Beta is proud to have him as an alumnus. AlphA BetA looks AheAd to successful fAll Matthew Campbell Long Beach, Calif.
