D elta Gamma encourages women to step into leadership positions and evolve not only while they are in college but throughout their lives. The women of Gamma Xi hold on to the significance of the anchor and remember the importance of giving back to the organization that helped provide so many important opportunities for them. Loren Hughes '11 is the perfect example of what it means to be a Delta Gamma. Only three months out of college, she was already giving to the Gamma Xi campaign. Loren didn't join a sorority immediately, but only after meeting Delta Gamma women who defied Greek stereotypes. It wasn't the frills and songs from formal recruitment that attracted Loren to a sorority; it was the genuine women she met in day-to-day interactions that won her over. "My undergraduate experience at Gamma Xi completely defined my entire time at Tech. I learned so much about myself through making great friends, holding leadership positions, and through relationships formed with multiple alumnae. Gamma Xi was my home away from home in every aspect." While in school, Loren served as vice president of finance where she learned valuable leadership skills and also met alumnae who proved to be important to her future. "I am now working full time in my first post- graduate job for Dinah Doty Hays '68 at Andres Construction Services in Dallas. She is such a mentor to me and I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to work with her." When Loren was on the Chapter Management Team, one of her responsibilities was serving on the House Corporation. "It was probably the coolest time to become a part of the House Corporation because it was right when we were starting to really get serious about the capital campaign. I was able to see that even though I cannot donate mass amounts of money to the campaign, every little bit counts. I feel that that is a big part of why people don't contribute, because they feel as though they cannot afford how much they are 'supposed' to donate. I am on a five-year plan with a small sum every month. It is manageable and easy for me, and at the end of those five years, it all adds up to a larger contribution." Loren is confident that the completion of the campaign will be beneficial to Gamma Xi's future at Texas Tech. "The fact of the matter is that Greek life is on the rise, and it is not going to decrease any time soon. This lodge will be able to support Gamma Xi's growth. It helps that it is also going to be a gorgeous lodge, so that will definitely assist in recruitment efforts."
