Saturday, July 9, 2011 – Daily News 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Should young people not read the parts of the Bible that are violent, scary? LET THEM READ IF THEY'RE INTERESTED The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: Most of the parts in the Bible that are violent and scary can be found in the Old Testament. Other than time and place it reads very much like the daily news. The conflicts, persecutions, struggles and troubles between people of different tribes was rampant then and is today as well. I believe young people should be introduced to the Old Testament with the under- standing it is a combination of historical understanding and myths with a moral and spiritual direction. They need to be taught to look beyond the incidents that took place and find the deeper meaning and lesson in what happened. With every dark and violent story there is the seed of greater wisdom that can enlighten us on how to make a better world and live a better life. From the historical and cultural point of view the Old Testament is a good resource to become familiar with our ancient ancestors and their culture. For spiri- tual nourishment and direction I suggest the words of Jesus in the New Testament, more specifically the Gospels. Jesus' message was one of love, forgiveness and compassion. He directed people to be friendly and not fight; to be compassionate and not condemn; to help not hurt. If you have a young person who is inter- ested in reading the Bible, I would guess they have the maturity to not be negatively affected by the discom- forting parts. PARENTS SHOULD DECIDE WHETHER KIDS ARE READY The Rev. Pat Rush, pastor, Visitation Catholic Church, Kansas City: Despite how we often speak of it, the Bible is not a single book. Rather, the Bible is a library of many books representing different kinds of literature that are variously accessible to the average reader. I don't recom- mend that people, regardless of age, read the books of a library sequentially from the first shelf to last. Rather, peo- ple are best served if they are deliberate about their choice of books, based on their background and knowledge. Similarly with the Bible. I don't recommend that peo- ple read it sequentially cover to cover, and I believe that certain books are more easily understood by the average modern reader. It is wonderful that young people read and appreciate the word of God in the Bible, but that is best done in a deliberate and orderly fashion. There are pas- sages in the Bible that may not be age-appropriate reading for young persons. The vetting of such passages requires good judgment on the part of the reader's parents and some supervision during the reading. When the parent feels that their children are of an age that they can understand a challenging biblical passage and when the parent is willing to sit and discuss the mean- ing of the passage with their children, that is the time that their young people should be invited to read those violent and scary scripture passages. American exceptionalism - Part 3 Every American president until our present leader has expressed American Exceptionalism, but Kennedy said it best. "We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the sur- vival and success of liberty…The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it – and the glow from that fire can truly light the world." His address speaks to the secular con- text of an American dream of free- dom for all – not just Americans. Yet he knew the book the Puritans tried to live by is the explicit repos- itory of the concepts we combine into what we call our exceptional- ism. Paul – speaking for Jesus Christ and His Father and Spirit – says, "For freedom Christ has set us free." The freedom of which we speak is not a means to an end; it is the end of our making and creation. Toward that end we remain unique on the world stage as a mil- itary power that acts with as much mercy as justice when we attack nations – like Afghanistan – who harbor terrorists and (into the bar- gain) are so hateful they prohibit women from seeking an education. We attacked Iraq because it contin- ues to threaten its own neighbors as it threatened us. And we remain unique in that we withdraw quickly following an attack – as quickly as a popular government can take the reins and stabilize the nation, and this has always been our pattern. (To those who say Iraq was about oil, where is the Iraqi oil we allegedly stole; where is the price relief at American pumps?) We behaved in this way with the Philip- pines, Cuba, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, Italy and Japan; there sim- ply are no examples of the other way around. When we built the Panama Canal, we first liberated Panama from Columbian oppressors. When we discovered the sources of yellow fever and various other public health plagues we made our knowledge – and our resources – available without hesitation. In the wake of both world wars we fed those displaced by combat and led the way in their rebuilding efforts. When we led the conquest of space we also led the drive to avoid militarizing that new frontier, and we have made our space resources and technology available in a precedent setting movement. We drove the great wave of missionary work of the 19th Century, and we are driving the short-term missions movement of today, with its emphasis on local indigenous control of decision mak- ing. Last but not least, our battles and our struggles have always been fought out in public, whether we debate healthcare, treatment of pris- oners of war, or the spending prior- ities of our nation and whether unions have the right to pressure the agenda. This is because we are – at our core – a transparent people on a road of repenting into freedom. It does not seem to matter whether our leaders are liberal or conservative in their shared com- mitment to what makes us Ameri- cans. Ronald Reagan said, "We have never been aggressors. We have always struggled to defend freedom and democracy. We have no territorial ambitions. We occupy no territories." Yet Bill Clinton said, "American remains the indispens- able nation. America, and only America, can make a difference between war and peace, between freedom and repression, between hope and fear." James Wilson GodTalk When I taught in the public schools in the seven- ties and early eighties I dis- tilled the American Dream for my students into the opportunity for all to make twenty thousand a year and live in a forty thousand dol- lar home. Those numbers today would look more like one hundred and two hun- dred thousand respectively, but the reality has not changed. Added to that opportunity is the chance to practice our faith – whatever it may be and none if we prefer – and work out our lives to suit our own understandings. Many will say that such opportunities exist around the world today – and so they do. But they never existed before America and we are the drivers of such a vision today. Others will ask if the French Revolution and the Soviet Revolution did not lead to the same thing; reality is that their legacy was the Reign of Terror and the subju- gation of millions until their defeat. Reality remains that we – at our best and so long as we serve our founding vision – are the nation that understands that so long as we trust in God for freedom we are set free – and not for ourselves alone but for a world to whom our guiding light gave His life. The Rev. Jim Wilson is heard Saturdays on KBLF AM 1490 at 8 a.m. This is the third in his series on American Exceptionalism as we wrap around American Independence Day. No charge in theft of relic from California church LONG BEACH (AP) — A woman who alleged- ly took a 780-year-old relic of St. Anthony from a Roman Catholic church in Southern California will not be prosecuted. Los Angeles County district attorney’s spokes- woman Sandi Gibbons told the Long Beach Press-Telegram Friday that neither St. Anthony’s parish in Long Beach nor the Archdiocese of Los Angeles wanted to pursue a case. Long Beach police said they recovered the relic at the residence of 41-year- old Maria Solis, who was arrested for investigation of burglary. She was seen at five Masses the day before the June 13 theft. District attorney records say Solis has no prior record, lives near the church at a facility for the Tehama County Church Directory This directory sponsored by: Red Bluff....
