Engle, the preem- inent politician in Tehama County history, had died at age 52. "Engle was a tough, savvy pol- itician," wrote historian Stephen Sayles in "California Historical Quarterly" in 1975. "Dubbed 'Con- gressman Fireball' by admiring colleagues, he was a human dy- namo, an authentic political an- imal, and an extraordinarily ef- fective legislator. His pragma- tism and sensitivity toward public opinion enabled him to develop from a rural, conservative Demo- cratic opponent of New Deal bu- reaucracy in the 1940s to an ur- ban-conscious, pro-civil rights liberal twenty years later." Sayles added, "His record indi- cated a strong attachment toward the 'little man,' a term he applied to small farmers and ranchers, miners, lumbermen, and busi- nessmen burdened by govern- mental bureaucracy and privi- leged economic interests. Buck- passing bureaucrats were often stung by rapier-like 'Engleisms,' colorful rural colloquialisms that were part of his pioneer heritage. … [H]e conducted himself in po- litical office so scrupulously that he died after thirty years of pub- lic service without a blemish on his integrity." Engle served in Congress from 1943 to 1964, during five presi- dential administrations — Frank- lin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Ken- nedy and Lyndon Johnson. Engle is the only Central Val- ley resident to serve in the Senate during the past 135 years. Friends speculated that had Engle lived, he would have been on a presiden- tial ticket by the 1970s. Engle was a Valley native with deep Tehama County roots. Born in Bakersfield in 1911 to Fred and Carita Engle, he moved dur- ing childhood to Shasta County and then to Manton, Gerber and Los Robles in Tehama County. In 1928, he graduated from Red Bluff High School, where he won the student body presidency by con- solidating fellow rural students into a power base to challenge di- vided "town" candidates. As a stu- dent at Chico Junior College, he decided that he would begin his 'WILDCAT IN WASHINGTON' DeathofSen.Engle, half a century later StaffReports RED BLUFF An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting an 18-year- old Redding woman Tues- day night at Crystal Apart- ments on 355 S.
