North Carolina no longer has a tax-free weekend but there is still a great need
for school supplies for students. On Friday, August 15, 2014 at Walgreens on
Ramsey Street from 8 am – 8 pm and on Friday, Aug. 22 at Walmart Supercenter
on Skibo Road from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., school supplies can be dropped off for
Cumberland County students.
"The primary purpose is to ensure that our children in need are able to have
supplies so that they can be successful in school," said Pamela Story, social work
coordinator of Cumberland County Schools. "We all know that the first day of
school is an exciting time and we want to make sure those students can compete
with their peers."
Story added that the focus is on students in need such as homeless students in
transitional housing, students who receive free and reduced lunch and students
whose parents are in between jobs and having a hard time.
"We identified 650 homeless students last year but we served more," said
Story. "Our goal is to receive 650 book bags filled with school supplies for those
students and certainly we want the supplies to help any of the others."
Supplies needed are book bags and marble composition notebooks for elementary
students and mesh book bags and flash drives for middle and high school students.
Other items include loose leaf paper, pencils, notebooks, pocket folders, rulers, cray-
ons, colored pencils, markers, glue, mechanical pencils and hand sanitizer.
"We really want to assist them with school supplies that will help them," said Story.
School supply donations are accepted year round at the CCS
Central Services Office located at 2465 Gillespie St. Children
need school supplies all year
long. For more information,

678-2621 or 678-2402.
