Service Awards (continued) Join Us For National Airborne Day Aug. 16 On August 16, representatives from the City of Fayetteville will be joining the U.S. Army, the Airborne & Special Operations Museum and the community for National Airborne Day. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Airborne Special Operations Museum. There will be free-fall demonstrations by the Golden Knights, hands-on demonstrations for families of military equipment and musical performances by the 82nd Airborne Division's "All-American" Chorus and "All-American" Band. Fire/Emergency Management Wins First Place In State HAZMAT Challenge Members of the Fayetteville Fire/Emergency Management Department Hazardous Materials Team participated in the HAZMAT Challenge competition on Saturday July 26th during the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo & Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Fayetteville team placed first in the competition beating out twelve other teams across the state. The competition consisted of three components: 1. Research covering a rail and highway transportation emergencies, 2. Hands on skills where blind operation of hazmat equipment were evaluated, and 3. Donning PPE and full protective suits and stopping a simulated chemical leak. This was the fourth time in the eleven year history of the event that Fayetteville has won the gold, more than any other department in the state. The following members of the Fire Department participated in the event: Capt. Roy West, Lt. Patrick McArdle, Lt. Johnny Deal, Eng. Matthew Turlington, Eng. Michael Frickman, FF Chad Sholar, and FF Keith Kinlaw. The winners were announced at the event following the judging. Second place honors were awarded to the Raleigh Fire Department while third place honors were awarded to newcomers, the North Carolina National Guard Civil Support Team.
