I thought I take this opportunity to share some of the tips I’ve learned over the years about packing, dressing and gear. Let’s look back a few years ago of what I took for a week long trip. My normal packing list consisted of seven pairs of socks; seven pairs of underwear. Time, experience and money can save you space, weight and frustration. One pair for each day. I also carried four riding shirts, two nice shirts, a couple of long shirts, a pair of jeans, slacks, a couple of pairs of shorts, pair of tennis shoes and sandals. I took an iPod, cell phone, camera and laptop; medi- cation and bathroom necessities. Fast forward to now and for the same week-long trip. Today I will pack two pairs of socks and two pair of underwear. Two pair of convertible pants, two riding shirts, a pair of sleeping shorts and shirt; sandals medication and bathroom necessities. For most trips my iPhone has replaced the computer, iPod and laptop into one device. Shirts will consist of materials made of cotton for hot weather and wick- ing material in the cooler temperatures. The convertible paints are great. The paint legs zip away and quickly turn into shorts. Mine are made of lightweight nylon and dry quickly and are easy to pack away in your bike. They can also be used as swimming trunks if you feel like you need to take a dip. To make bathroom toiletries more manageable, I got a little mesh bag that I can see through. I also have a clip so it can hang on the back of a shower door or around a towel rack. This keeps my stuff out of the way if you have friends traveling with you. I put all of my medications in a zip lock bag. You can’t afford for them to get wet. I use Dr. Bronners Organic Liquid Soap. This soap can be used a variety uses. This includes, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, laundry detergent, dish liquid and bunch of other things. Although cell phones are nice, there are parts of the country that don’t &$$1PwwC svw FUXYARE Gwsxs Yabww(v ws1v wswws wswvxws vsu swu x vsy 0!uvsw &!v 20 $$$ w"Gv uv %) $$$" Cs3%$!))%!&22' xss w" WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM have cell service. Last year, we were riding in West Virginia and I noticed pay phones and phone booths. At the hotel that night I could see people walking to the phone booth. I had to ask myself if people really knew how one of those things work these days. Now as part of my personal items I have “phone card” on my list. You can pick up a calling card at most department stores and they are nice to have just in case of an emergency. Another nice thing to have is a roll of quarters. This is good if you need to use a laundry machine I’ve been to a few of them and when I got there they didn’t have detergent or a change machine. It is very frustrating going to the laundromat and taking your clothes in and then having to pack back up and go hunt for quarters. Another good use for quarters is if you need to use a car wash to clean your bike. My iPhone has dramatically cut my need for devices, chargers and power. It also serves as my spare GPS. I no longer carry a laptop with me unless I plan on doing an article for the Up & Coming Weekly. For typing something like this I really need a keyboard. The built in cameras in a smartphones now have the same or better megapixels as my old digital cameras. I have found that buying luggage for my bikes is a worthy investment. My first few trips, I packed everything on the bike.. That was good for the room but not at all good when I got to a hotel. With the luggage I pack up my stuff nice and neat and only have a few bags to carry to the room. I hope this space on this page will help you find space in your bike. Ride Safe!
