4A Daily News – Thursday, June 16, 2011 Pastimes Air National Guard Band of the West Coast The Air National Guard Band of the West Coast will perform a free concert Thursday, June 30 at the State Theatre in Red Bluff. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and concessions, including beer and local wines, will be available in the lobby. The concert is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be avail- able beginning Monday at the Daily News, Copy Center, The Human Bean, Wink and Sky River Music, and the night of the concert at the box office. Admission is free for as many as 700 people. The band has per- formed throughout the United States and abroad since its inception 1942. Air National Guard bands support the global Air Force (including Air National Guard missions) by fostering patriotism and providing musical ser- vices for the military com- munity as well as the gen- eral public. The Air National Guard Band of the West Coast, which serves com- munities throughout Northern California, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, is a highly sought after ensemble of Arts & entertainment Art Assoc show opens Friday Courtesy photo musicians who perform at the finest venues in the West. The band was first des- ignated in 1942 as the 61st Army Air Force Band at Columbia Army Air Base, S.C., part of the 3rd Air Force. Since that time it has been known as the 561st Air Force band, and The Band of the Pacific Coast. The organization received its current name in 1999. Formerly sta- tioned at Hayward ANG Base in Hayward, the band relocated to Moffett Federal Airfield in 1994, representing the129th Rescue Wing. The organization is commanded and conduct- ed by Capt. Vu Nguyen, who was newly assigned as commander in June 2005, and the fifth officer to hold this position. The band is home to some of the finest working musicians in the San Fran- cisco Bay Area and Cali- fornia’s Central Valley. More than 25 musicians perform in the following highly acclaimed and award winning bands: Air National Guard Band of the West Coast Con- cert/Marching Band, The Jive Bombers (Jazz/Dance Band), The Joint Chiefs of Jazz (Jazz Combo), The Winds of Peace (Wood- wind Ensemble), The Supersonic Saxes (Saxo- phone Ensemble), The Brass Wings (Brass Ensemble), and the newly formed Rock Band, The Afterburners. Randy Travis to play Tuesday in Redding The 2011-12 Cas- cade Theatre/Jefferson Public Radio Perfor- mance Series kicks off on June 21 with a con- cert by country music legend Randy Travis. Randy Travis revived country music in the ‘80s by stripping off the rock 'n' roll glitz and digging deep into its honky-tonk roots. The theme for the show is “Tiptoeing to 55 Years of Art.” It is the initial exhibit in celebration of the Association’s 55 years of providing Red Bluff and Tehama County with art experiences. Over the years this group has donated their time and talents to benefit many local service organiza- tions, youth and the public in general. “The Big Picture is thrilled to help Red Bluff Art Association kick off their 55th year anniversary,” said owner Diane Rabalais. “We love showing the diversi- ty of our local artists. Come in and check out the newest works of RBAA.” The art featured will represent the latest works of 20-25 artists working in various mediums and genres including oil, acrylics, pastel, watercolor, mixed media, color pencil, collage and depicts both repre- sentational and non-representational subjects. This exhibit will be in place until August 22. The association is currently in the planning process for a gala celebration in November and December commencing with the Art Walk. We would like to call on the community to share information, stories, or items of public interest regarding early members of RBAA. The association first organized in 1956 and met in the home of Marjorie Garrett with Dr. Cahoone Yuen as Chairman. Other founding members included: Margaret Rae, Jewel Quisenberry, Art Germain. Eva- lyn Hinkle, Linda Enggleston, Dan Souza and Inez Hinkle. RBAA is also looking for those who possess art pieces by early-day members and would be willing to loan these for public display.
