For me, it seems like it was just last week when the men returned from their summer jobs and moved back to Manhattan and the Alumni Board Committee sponsored an all-Chapter retreat for returning members. This spring semester started and then the campus was hit with a snow storm to close school for a few days. needless to say this was a great opportunity for the men of Kansas Beta to build a snow fort and organize a hillbilly hot tub in a pickup truck on the basketball court. It took a few days to completely dig out from the snow and the men got a break from school early in the semester. I try to stop by the Chapter house on my way to campus in the mornings and/or during a meal time to chat with the housemother and the men. This is the fifth year for our housemother, Mrs. Jean reiter, and I cannot say enough about the work she does to keep things running smoothly. She does not get the credit she deserves but is a great asset to the Chapter and the AVC. This is the third year to have Sandy ruthstsom as our cook. She and Mrs. reiter make a good team and together they keep us within our food budget. As I have mentioned before, this is not an easy task trying to provide meals for over 80 hungry young men. Our out-of-house meal program has continued to increase in the number of men participating, and this is due to the consistent food quality with many items made from scratch. Kansas Beta continues to be one of the top academic fraternities on campus. we were ranked sixth in grades for the fall 2013 semester with a 3.2781. This is up from 3.2191 in the previous spring semester of 2013. In terms of scholarship, we had 12 men earn a 4.0 gPA and 24 men earn a 3.5 gPA or better during the fall semester. These 36 men were recognized at the annual scholarship awards dinner earlier in the semester. The academic standards set by the Chapter require all men to maintain a 2.75 gPA or be placed on academic probation. Two consecutive semesters with grades less than the 2.75 threshold will result in expulsion from the Chapter. In addition, the Chapter continues to be active in campus activities. we have men involved with the Inter Fraternity Council (IFC) and many other campus organizations. I hope this gives the Kansas Beta Alumni a good picture of what has happened during the year.
