Rookie Brandon Crawford hit a tiebreaking RBI triple in the seventh inning and later scored an insurance run to help the first-place Giants win their third straight series. Cain and Maya were strong early, with the game remain- ing scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. That’s when the Giants came through with back-to-back, one-out doubles by Eli Whiteside and Cain. The hit was just the third in 27 at-bats this season for Cain and his first RBI in exactly one year. The Giants were unable to add on as Maya got Freddy Sanchez to ground out with runners on second and third to end the inning. The Nationals answered in the bot- tom half when Mike Morse hit a leadoff single and later scored on Rick Ankiel’s two-out double. That’s just the fifth run the Nats have scored for Maya in his eight big-league starts. Maya allowed one run and four hits in six innings and remained winless in his career as the Nationals were unable to get a second run across against Cain. The Giants ended up taking the lead back in the bottom half of the seventh when Crawford hit a two-out, RBI triple off Sean Burnett (1-3) and then scored on Whiteside’s single. That proved to be more than enough for Cain, who improved to 16-0 over the past two years when getting at least three runs of support. He allowed five hits and one walk in his 13th career complete game, needing just 110 pitches. The Nationals got their first clean hit with two outs in the sixth when Ian Desmond lined a single to left-center. But Washington was unable to generate any threats against Cain, who struck out the side in order in the fourth inning against the middle of the Nationals lineup. The Giants didn’t fare much better early against Maya, despite getting leadoff hits in the second and third innings. Aubrey Huff was doubled off first to end the second when he ran on Aaron Rowand’s blooper that was caught by right fielder Laynce Nix. Brandon Crawford was then caught stealing for the second out in the third inning by Wilson Ramos, who has thrown out 11 of 23 attempted basestealers. Athletics lose again BALTIMORE (AP) — Rookie Zach Britton took a four- hitter into the seventh inning, Mark Reynolds homered, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the skidding Oakland Athletics 3- 2 on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep. It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Athletics, their longest skid since a 10-game run in 2008. Oakland scored only four runs in the series and never held a lead. A’s second baseman Jemile Weeks went 2 for 3 and scored both Oakland runs. The former first-round draft pick went hitless in his major league debut Tuesday night. J.J. Hardy drove in a run for the Orioles, who have won four of five. It was their first three-game sweep of the A’s in Baltimore since July 21-23, 1998. Britton (6-4) allowed four hits and two walks in 6 1-3 innings. The left-hander, who tied his career high with six strikeouts, was 0-3 in six starts since May 1. Kevin Gregg worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save. Baltimore got all its runs in the fifth inning against Josh Outman (1-1). Vladimir Guerrero hit a leadoff single, advanced on a two-out wild pitch and scored on a single by Hardy. Reynolds followed with his 10th home run. Oakland ended a string of 19 straight scoreless innings in the sixth. After singles by Weeks and Coco Crisp put runners at the corners with no outs, Daric Barton hit into a 4-6-3 dou- ble play. The A’s closed to 3-2 in the eighth. Left fielder Nolan Reimold misjudged a line drive by Weeks for a three- base error and Crisp followed with a sacrifice fly. The A’s made two exceptional fielding plays in the early going. Crisp tracked down a liner to deep center by Guerrero, and short- stop Cliff Pennington dived deep in the hole to snare a grounder before rising to his feet and throwing out Hardy. Backed with that kind of defensive support and aided by a double play, Outman faced the minimum 12 batters through four innings. But Baltimore broke open the scoreless duel in the fifth. Oakland starters are 0-8 with a 6.88 ERA during the nine-game losing streak. GOLF Wilcox Oaks Golf Club hosted their annual Women’s Invitational Golf Tournament this past weekend in weather more conducive to watching old movies by a roaring fire. Play began on Friday with a prac- tice round and a horserace for all the teams, followed by a buffet dinner, a chipping contest and a putting contest. Kellie Froome, Kathy Stevens, Teresa Connors and Michelle Bailey won the horserace. The format of the first round of play, Saturday, was three best balls on the odd holes and two best balls on the even holes. On Sunday, the format was two best balls on all holes.
