Cannon as the new county manager. The commissioners held a special meeting June 9 and unanimously voted to hire Cannon, who has served as interim county manager since April 1. Former County Manager James Martin retired in March after serving 14 years in the position. Cannon, who is the first woman to manage the county, became the deputy county manager in February 2011 after previously serving as the assistant county manager for financial and administrative services since 2000. She was the county's finance director from 1998 to August 2013 and has worked for the county's finance department since 1990. Cannon is a Fayetteville native and graduated from Seventy-First High School. She holds an accounting degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is a certified public accountant and a North Carolina Certified Government Finance Officer. Under her leadership, the county's finance department has received the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting every year from 1998 to 2013. www.co.cumberland.nc.us Cannon Hired As New County Manager Cannon Homeless Stand Down Needs Donations Donations and volunteers are needed for the Community Homeless Stand Down, to be held July 24-25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Festival Park. The goal is to give homeless individuals access to agencies and services. Organizers are anticipating reaching approximately 600 people during the two-day event. The Stand Down is sponsored by the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Cumberland County Continuum of Care on Homelessness. The county's Community Development department is a partner. Food, medical screenings and free haircuts will be provided, as well as information on housing assistance, employment opportunities, health services, veterans services and more. Organizers are seeking donations of the following items: T-shirts, foot powder, sleeping bags, bus passes, petroleum jelly, bug repellent, underwear (male and female), backpacks, tote bags, hygiene kits, lip balm, wipes, hand sanitizer and sunscreen. Donations may be delivered to the Fayetteville Police Department at 467 Hay Street, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If donating large quantities, please call Officer Stacy Sanders at (910) 433-1846. Monetary donations are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to the Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc., and mail to 308 Green Street, P.O. Box 2345, Fayetteville, N.C., 28302. Please indicate in the memo section on your check that the donation is for the "Homeless Special Projects Fund." Donations are need by July 11. DSS Seeks Box Fan Donations The Cumberland County Department of Social Services is accepting donations of new box fans from civic organizations, churches, businesses and invidiuals in the community. Deliver fans to the DSS building, 1225 Ramsey St., between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
