Monday, June 6, 2011 – Daily News 3B WORLD BRIEFING Departure of Yemen’s president sets off party SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The departure of Yemen’s battle-wounded president for treatment in Saudi Arabia set off wild street celebrations Sunday in the capital, where crowds danced, sang and slaughtered cows in hopes that this spelled a victori- ous end to a more than three-month campaign to push their leader from power. Behind the festive atmosphere, many feared Ali Abdullah Saleh, a masterful political survivor who has held power for nearly 33 years, will yet return — or leave the country in ruins if he can’t. Hanging in the balance was a country that even before the lat- est tumult was beset by deep poverty, malnutrition, tribal conflict and violence by an active al-Qaida franchise with international reach. Saleh, who was taken overnight to a military hos- pital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, underwent suc- cessful surgery on his chest to remove jagged pieces of wood that splintered from a mosque pulpit when his compound was hit by rockets on Friday, said medical officials and a Yemeni diplomat. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not have permission to release the information. The stunning rocket attack, which the govern- ment first blamed on tribal fighters who in recent weeks turned against the president and later on al- Qaida, killed 11 bodyguards and seriously injured five senior officials worshipping just alongside Saleh. While Saleh is away, Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is acting as temporary head of state, said the deputy information minister, Abdu al-Jana- di. The minister said the president would return to assume his duties after his treatment, though experts on Yemeni affairs questioned whether a return is possible in the face of so much opposition. Sprouts from Germany blamed in E. coli outbreak HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — The terrifying E. coli outbreak in Europe appears to have been caused by vegetable sprouts grown on an organic farm in Germany, an agriculture official Sunday as the toll climbed to at least 22 dead and more than 2,200 sickened. Preliminary tests found that bean sprouts and other sprout varieties from the farm in the Uelzen area, between the northern cities of Hamburg and Hannover, could be traced to infections in five Ger- man states, Lower Saxony Agriculture Minister Gert Lindemann said. ‘‘There were more and more indications in the last few hours that put the focus on this farm,’’ Lin- demann said. Many restaurants involved in what is now the deadliest known E. coli outbreak in modern history had received deliveries of the sprouts, which are often used in salads, Lindemann spokesman Gert Hahne told The Associated Press. Definitive test results should be available Mon- day, Lindemann said. Bombings kill 24; al-Qaida commander killed ISLAMABAD (AP) — A suicide bomber attacked a bakery in Pakistan’s northwest on Sun- day, killing 18 people, and another bomb in the volatile region left six others dead. The attacks were the latest in a wave of bloodshed to hit Pakistan since the U.S. raid that killed al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden. Also Sunday, a Pakistani security official said authorities are nearly certain that a recent U.S. mis- sile strike killed al-Qaida commander Ilyas Kash- miri. The suicide bomber struck the bakery in a neigh- borhood were army personnel live in the town of Nowshera, police said. At least two soldiers were among the dead. The attacker was a young man carrying around four pounds (eight kilograms) of explosives. The blast caused some gas cylinders in the bakery to explode, leading to a fire that left many of the 40 wounded in serious condition, said Fazal Maula, a police official. Earlier in the day, a bomb exploded at a bus stop in the Matani area of the northwest, killing six peo- ple and wounded several others, officials said. It appeared to have been planted at the bus stop, as opposed to a suicide attack. 20 dead as Israel battles Palestinian protesters MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights (AP) — Israeli troops on Sunday battled hundreds of pro- Palestinian protesters who tried to burst across Syria’s frontier with the Golan Heights, killing a reported 20 people and wounding scores more in the second outbreak of deadly violence in the border area in less than a month. The clashes, marking the anniversary of the Arab defeat in the 1967 Mideast war, drew Israeli accusa- tions that Syria was orchestrating the violence to shift attention away from a bloody crackdown on opposition protests at home. The marchers, who had organized on Facebook, passed by Syrian and U.N. outposts on their way to the front lines. ‘‘The Syrian government is trying to created a provocation,’’ said Israel’s chief military spokesman, Brig. Gen.
