Mount Shasta will pro- vide a dramatic presence for ShastaYama 2014, cele- brating a taiko summit of the most honored and re- spected taiko — Japanese drum — artists in America on July 26 at Mount Shas- ta's Shastice Park. Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka and San Fran- cisco Taiko Dojo and Mas- ter Kenny Endo and the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensem- ble will headline an excit- ing expanded ShastaYama show. Also appearing will be Masato Baba, Michelle Fujii, and Toru Watanabe, representing the leaders of a new taiko generation. The Shasta Taiko commu- nity group, led by taiko pi- oneers and Shasta Taiko/ ShastaYama founders Rus- sel Baba and Jeanne Mer- cer, will also perform, shar- ing the stage with more than 30 dynamic perform- ers in a grand celebration of taiko, dance, and music. The spectacular set- ting at the base of Mount Shasta in Shastice Park has proven to be a wonder- ful venue to perform taiko outdoors. ShastaYama has thrilled and inspired thou- sands of attendees. Shasta- Yama is the largest outdoor taiko festival in the country, and its success mirrors the amazing development of taiko in America and world- wide. Grand Master Tanaka introduced modern taiko to America, and his group, the San Francisco Taiko Dojo celebrated their 45th year in 2013. Grand Mas- ter Tanaka has been hon- ored for artistic excellence and authenticity and rec- ognized for his contribu- tions by both American and Japanese governments. He and his troupe have toured worldwide and performed in prestigious venues and with esteemed musicians, including Tony Bennett, Dave Brubeck, Art Blakey, Bobby McFerrin, and Max Roach, to name a few. They have been featured in ma- jor motion pictures — "The Right Stuff," "Rising Sun," "Return of the Jedi," and "Apocalypse Now." Master Kenny Endo is the first American and for- eigner to receive a "natori" — Japanese stage name and master's license. Master Endo has been influential in introducing America to Japanese classical and festi- val drumming and is recog- nized world-wide for the use of taiko in contemporary compositions. He is a pro- lific composer and has per- formed for Michael Jack- son, Prince, and Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Masato Baba is the son of Russel Baba and Jeanne Mercer. He is the Musical Director of Los Angeles based company TaikoPro- ject and a member of cut- ting edge taiko group, On Ensemble. Masato has per- formed taiko at the Acad- emy Awards, on The Voice, and with Alicia Keys on X- Factor. Michelle Fujii is the Ar- tistic Director of Portland Taiko. She and husband Toru Watanabe are known for their creative fusion of taiko and dance. Michelle has toured with San Jose Taiko, On Ensemble, and TaikoProject. Toru and Michelle's dance and the- atrical backgrounds have helped to raise Portland Taiko's presentations and taiko itself to new and ex- citing levels. ShastaYama 2014 will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 6 p.m. at Mount Shas- ta's Shastice Park — Rock- fellow and Adams Drive. Gates open at 5 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available. Bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating on the grass field, and warm clothes and flashlights for after sunset. No pets or glass. From kayaking to star- gazing, there is something for everyone. Programs run through Labor Day weekend. Res- ervations are required for the park kayak programs and can be made up to two weeks in advance by calling (530) 242-3462. While programs are free, visitors must display a valid day use pass or other park pass on all vehicles in the park. KayakProgram Daily tours at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. are offered on Sunday through Satur- day except Friday and last 2 hours. Moonlight Kayak Program July 7-11 at 8:00 p.m., Au- gust 5-9 at 7:30 p.m., and September 3-7 at 7:00 p.m. Experience dramatic changes in the landscape as you explore Whiskey- town Lake under the light of the moon. Reservations slots fill up fast for this program, calling (530) 242- 3462 in the morning two weeks in advance will give the best opportunity of se- curing a slot. Special Access Kayak Program Friday evenings during July and August and last- ing 2 hours. This program has been developed for individuals with special needs so they can enjoy a kayaking ad- venture. Visitors who have limited mobility, disabili- ties, developmental issues, or restrictions due to age or illness are encouraged to give kayaking a try. Junior Ranger Kayak Program Mondays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. and lasting 90 minutes. Join us for a special pro- gram that pairs parents and their children in kay- aks so they can discover and share the joy of nature with each other as they pad- dle and play. The Monday program is geared for chil- dren three to six years of age and the Thursday pro- gram is geared toward chil- dren seven to twelve years of age. Children along with their parents can learn about preserving and protecting park resources while mak- ing new friends during a special one-hour activity that explores the wonders of Whiskeytown. Join Whiskeytown NPS firefighters to learn how they manage fire to pro- mote forest health and protect lives and property. Children will learn about the important role that fire plays in the ecosystems of our national parks dur- ing this hands-on activity. Children who complete the program will earn a Junior Firefighter Badge. Meet at the Oak Bottom Amphithe- ater. Walk In Time Wednesdays and Sat- urdays at 3 p.m. lasting 2 hours. Discover how pioneers and prospectors Charles Camden and Levi Tower reshaped the landscape to create a home for their families and an "oasis" for many travelers during and after the California Gold Rush. Visit the historic or- chard and find apple trees over 150 years old that still bear fruit! After a tour of the Camden house, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the area, then try your hand at finding gold the old-fash- ioned way—with a gold pan in the creek! Meet the ranger at the Tower House Historic District parking lot bulletin board. Evening Astronomy Program Friday evenings at 9 p.m. during August and Septem- ber, start time is at 8:30 p.m. and lasting 1 hour. Spend the evening with a Sky Ranger and discover the stories of how ancient cultures used the sky to navigate and mark im- portant seasonal changes. Learn about the challenges we face today as urban light pollution threatens the dark night sky and find out what you can do to help. After a 20 minute presenta- tion, the Shasta Astronomy Club will share their power- ful telescopes to assist visi- tors with their celestial gaz- ing. Meet at the Oak Bottom Amphitheater for the first half of the program and the second half at the Oak Bot- tom Beach parking lot. The night con- stellations often elude ur- ban dwellers, but at Whis- keytown, visitors are able to see deep into space aided by powerful telescopes pro- vided by the passionate and knowledgeable Shasta Astronomy Club. NPS Sky Rangers provide engaging activities and share epic tales of heroes and demi- gods immortalized in the constellations. Take Paige Bar Road and meet at the Mount Shasta Mine Loop Trail parking lot. WHISKEYTOWN Ranger-led activities offered Children are invited to an art lesson on Brandy Creek Beach at 10 a.m. Sat- urday, June 21, with artist Charles Graybosch, Whis- keytown artist-in-resi- dence. Children with a parent or guardian are welcome to participate. The target audience is ages 2 to 10, but all are invited to join in. Water color paint kits, paper and instruction from Graybosch will be available until noon. "This is a fun and unique opportunity for children to meet a real artist" said park Superintendent Jim Milestone. "We hope par- ents will take advantage of this special program, giv- ing their kids a chance to learn to paint with differ- ent colors and enjoy a day at the beach." The program is free to the public with paint kits and paper supplied by the Friends of Whiskeytown, a non-profit organization supporting Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Graybosch was born in Oklahoma City in 1988, but has spent most of his life in Chico. He received his Bache- lors in Fine Arts from the UC San Diego in 2010 and Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University in 2013. His work has been shown at the WPA Art Ex- change in Los Angeles, First Street Gallery in New York, Foire Internatinale du Dessin and Galiere d'Art Contemporain en Ligne in France. CHILDREN Art on the beach offered in Redding CHICO The Shortz! Film Festival is an annual inter- national short film festival in Chico, set for Sept. 12-14, which showcases the best and brightest short films from around the globe. The festival accepts and screens short films with running times of 40 min- utes or less in any genre. Created by local film- makers, Shortz! was started in 2011 with the desire to bring other art- ists together in a fun and funky environment, to meet and network with the ultimate goal of producing more films, as well as expe- riencing the showcasing of their works to a large, reac- tive audience. Now in its fourth sea- son, Shortz! boasts large daily audience attendance in one of the oldest cinema theaters in Northern Cali- fornia, the El Rey.
