The amount of avail- able dollars is based on fi- nancial performance of the hospital. This year the hospital has $34,899 to award to agen- cies that meet grant re- quirements. Grant projects should fo- cus on collaboration among programs and directly im- pact one of the top iden- tified health needs of the community as chosen by the St. Elizabeth Commu- nity Hospital Advisory Council from the 2011 Com- munity Health Needs As- sessment. These areas in- clude obesity, drug abuse and chronic health condi- tions such as diabetes or congestive heart failure. The objectives of the Dig- nity Health Community Grants program include fo- cusing on disproportionate health-related unmet needs of the community, empha- sizing primary prevention and addressing underlying causes of health problems contributing to a seamless continuum of care, building community capacity and emphasizing collaboration. Applicants are invited to contact Amy Schutter for guidance via email at northstategrants@hotmail. com. Letters of intent are to be submitted to Amy at that address no later than 5 p.m. July 18. All letters of intent are reviewed by a selection committee organized by Sr. Pat Manoli, senior director of Mission Integration, and finalists are invited to sub- mit a full proposal. All community grant forms are available on the St. Elizabeth Community Hospital Website in the About Us left tab of the main page of the website and may be submitted to northstategrants@dignity- health.org. Only electronic copies of the letter of intent and full proposal will be accepted. Those invited to apply will be notified by July 28 to complete a full proposal. GRANTS Hospitaltoofferfundstocommunityprograms The most pow- erful financial tool you have at your disposal is your ability to control your thoughts and the circumstance in your life. Your at- titude is the only thing in your life over which you have complete control. Your attitude is more important than anything — more important than education or experience. It is more important than how much money you have, how much you owe, what you would like to do or where you want to go. You cannot design the circumstances of your life. But you can tailor your at- titude in response to those situations. The way you choose to respond to your circumstances from the mundane to the major has the potential to change the course of your life. Here are some ideas for how you can put your atti- tude to work for you. GET ANGRY. Debt is the pits. It eliminates your options, keeps you awake at night, can make you lie to your creditors — even lie to your spouse. I know. I've been in horrible debt. So what are you go- ing to do about it? You can continue to whine and com- plain. Or I have a better idea. Get mad! Decide once and for all that you will no lon- ger sell your soul to credi- tors. Not one more day, not one more purchase. Get in- dignant at the very idea of transferring your future wealth to creditors. Repeat after me: "I've had it, and I'm not going to live on credit anymore!" CAMPAIGN. Think of your attitude as your per- sonal ad agency, public re- lations firm and market- ing organization all rolled into one. Flood your mind with so many compelling messages of hope and en- couragement that no space remains for doubt and dis- couragement. CONTENTMENT. Choosing to be content doesn't mean you toss out your goals and dreams. Contentment is not com- placency. It is deciding to want what you have. Con- tentment is the way to deal with self-pity and other destructive behav- iors. Contentment is the equivalent of an emotional massage. It feels that good. GRATITUDE. The sim- ple act of choosing to be grateful for what you have rather than focusing on what you don't have is powerful beyond words. Sounds cheesy perhaps, but once you experience the power of a grateful heart, you will understand what a powerful antidote it is for the negative attitudes of greed, anger and fear. SELF TALK. Taking a few moments to have a heart-to-heart talk with yourself is an effective way to stop mindless spending. Ask yourself: Do I need this? Don't I have something already that will do just as well? Do I have the cash to pay for it? Could I delay the pur- chase for a few weeks? Am I willing to sit on my decision for 48 hours? The single best money- saving strategy I've learned over the years is when I run across some- thing I think I have to own, just wait a little while. More often than not, I don't go back to buy it because I've either for- gotten all about it or sim- ply changed my mind. The Corning Patriots donated the router, which can provide 10 seniors ac- cess to the Internet at the same time. Every day, seniors share the information they ac- quire while visiting the many web sites providing information that is helpful to the elderly community. The AARP/TaxAide Pro- gram will also be able to take advantage of the new system when it returns to the Corning Senior Cen- ter in February to prepare taxes for the community.
