Themostre- cent National Day of Repentance was Wednesday, April 30. President Abra- ham Lincoln called for a day of Prayer, Fasting, and Humil- iation April 30, 1863. People prayed only in the North, the South being at war with the North and dis- inclined to do anything at the behest of Lincoln. Now I would never contend that God was on one side or the other in a war; His aim is that we come onto His side. But He does have a habit of responding to heartfelt prayer, and He surely hated slavery. Two months after this day of repentance the two sides fought the Battle of Gettysburg and the tide turned permanently in fa- vor of the Union. Some would say, "Well, if God hates slavery would not the tide have inevita- bly turned," and the an- swer would be a resounding No. God hates lots of things that abide in our world. But He has a habit of respond- ing to heartfelt prayer. April 30, 1789, our first president, George Wash- ington, took his oath of of- fice and gave his first inau- gural address. Washington led the members of gov- ernment onto their knees in prayer. He dedicated the fledgling nation to God, like his New England fore- fathers building a biblical "city on a hill." Some would say, "Just a minute; Wash- ington was a Virginian and everybody knows the Vir- ginia colony was a commer- cial venture with plenty of exploitation of black slaves and native people." They would be right about that, but they would be wrong to ignore the reality of Wash- ington's life – a life bathed in prayer, worship, and re- pentance as a lifestyle – a life that shows his spiritual forefathers to be the Pilgrims and the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay, men and women who introduced the concept of covenant to the Americas. Washington led a nation that was weak, disorga- nized, and virtually bank- rupt. Bathed in prayer and dedication to God, it sur- vived and prospered to be- come the greatest nation on earth and the one most blessed by God after Israel. This year National Day of Repentance officially linked arms with National Day of Prayer, one day later on Thursday, May 1. NDP's theme was One Voice United in Prayer; it comes from Romans 15:6, in which Paul calls the Body to be One in prayer and praise to the Lord Jesus. We also linked arms unofficially with Washington: Man of Prayer, an event that hap- pened in the congressio- nal Statuary Hall one week later, May 7. All three ob- servances focused on lov- ing God and answering His call to repent – re-focus – on Him. We do not believe God will reward our humil- ity by lifting us out of the national quicksand in which we seem trapped. We be- lieve, rather, that He has never abandoned us, but that we must return to the shelter of His wings if we would give Him the kind of access to us that permits His blessing and healing to occur. That is what He says in His own Word and American history supports as His pattern. In California alone we have seen two kinds of drought healed through prayer-led action. The last drought in California be- gan in 2008 and hundreds – a critical mass for that time – prayed daily ask- ing God to break it. Pro- phetic words were uttered in the state that God would break the drought in its third year if people prayed – and that is precisely what happened. In a man-made drought a federal judge – relying on bogus science – threw the state into eco- nomic chaos by closing the pumps in the Sacramento River Delta and costing some forty thousand jobs. Suits were brought and presentations made – and again prayer was offered daily that hearts might be softened. After some eigh- teen months Judge Oliver Wanger announced he was unimpressed by the science for closing the pumps and the water again began to flow in the delta. At this time God is calling for a thoroughgoing repen- tance in His Church for Cal- ifornia's history of leading the nation in shedding inno- cent blood, covenant break- ing, sexual sin, and idolatry. He does not want a pound of flesh from us, but He does require a ton of re-focus. In the National Day of Re- pentance we called on all churches – across the nation – to set aside May 4 as Re- pentance Sunday. The day was open to be observed in any way each congregation and ministry desired – but as one Body. Let this prayer be the beginning of resto- ration of Constitution and Covenant. Let us repent not because it "works" but be- cause it is right. Let God be the one who works as we get out of His way. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Fi na nc ia l wo rk sh op s et i n fa ll By Lauren Markoe Religion News Service NEW YORK Jewish soldiers and sailors will read from a new prayer book this Me- morial Day, one that aims to satisfy Jews across the spec- trum of Jewish practice — a feat its predecessor did not achieve. To show off its broad ap- peal, the new camouflage- covered prayer book will be inaugurated during ser- vices this weekend in three New York City synagogues representing the three larg- est branches of Judaism: Or- thodox, Conservative and Reform. "We have done some his- torical research, and there has never been a time that three such disparate syna- gogues have used the same prayer book," said Rabbi Harold L. Robinson, a re- tired rear admiral who is director of the Jewish Wel- fare Board's Jewish Chap- lains Council. The Army's 29 Jewish military chaplains have of- ten preferred their partic- ular tradition's prayer book to any other's. At the U.S. air base in Ramstein, Ger- many, Robinson peeked into the chapel storeroom and found copies of every move- ment's prayer books going back a generation — proof to him of the need for a new prayerbook. "We wanted a book that was small enough for them to own personally, and com- plete enough so that rabbis of every perspective would use it," Robinson said. In Hebrew and English, the new pocket-sized, 650- page prayer book, known as a "siddur" in Hebrew, includes prayers for daily use, for Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) and for holidays. The chaplains council paid for and published it, charging a team of Ortho- dox, Conservative and Re- form rabbis to include lan- guage from each movement's standard prayer books. The aim was an inclusive book, but one that would not offend anyone either. Not all Jewish military chaplains will turn to it all the time, said Rabbi Mitchell Rocklin, an Orthodox rabbi with the 395th Combat Sus- tainment Support Battalion, an Army Reserve unit based in Middletown, Conn. "It's not like this is the M16 the military issues, and that's what you have to use," said Rocklin, who served on the committee that edited the siddur. "The idea is to work out the best prayer book we can. No one is going to be over- joyed, but almost everybody will be able to use it." For the Orthodox, for ex- ample, whose observance strictly follows Jewish Scrip- tures and oral traditions, the new prayer book includes a more complete morning service and a full grace af- ter meals. On the other side of the Jewish spectrum, the Re- form movement, from which Robinson hails, wanted a siddur using egalitarian lan- guage. The siddur, six years in the making, will have a first run of 11,000 copies. It is free to any chaplain in the mili- tary or Department of Veter- ans Affairs who requests it.
