We began in the middle of the frigid and long, Missouri winter and, after finishing a phenomenal fall semester, signed 22 new members to our spring class. This was the most in a very long time and near the largest on campus! New Chapter Advisor Welcomed This year we welcomed our new chapter advisor, John Hopson. John has been of great help to all of us, especially to those on the executive board. As the VP of programming, John has helped me plan dinner exchanges, inter-fraternal events, coordinate with hotels, and even send bills. His experience and ideas were valuable assets this spring. Centennial Celebration in Review Missouri Alpha turned 100 on April 10, 2014. This was an amazing feat and one that many Greek chapters on campus can't say they've achieved. Every member, executive board member, and house mom or dad deserves credit for this incredible accomplishment. There is one member who this truly would not have been possible without—John Hartman '61. The plaque inside the red door at 405 Kentucky reads, "The House that John Built." He led a remarkable campaign in 2004, which helped raise money for a renovation of the house. In 2014, he is still contributing in a major way. After months of work on the centennial events, we were ready to celebrate! John had non-stop events planned for both Friday and Saturday. There was an excellent undergraduate showing and the alumni attendance was unbelievable. On Friday, we hosted a reception at the house from 4 to 10 p.m. The house was in perfect condition and the weather was beautiful. Brothers mingled on the outdoor patio, in the dining room, and throughout the house, exchanging stories throughout the night. This was awesome for the undergraduates to hear stories from alumni. Though our ages may be decades apart, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We began the next day with the performance of the initiation ritual. We initiated freshman brother Ben Kane '17. The initiation was extremely special to me because I saw that no matter how many years go on, this SigEp ritual does not change. After we congratulated our new brother and offered him the handshake, the alumni headed to Faurot Field. They were welcomed in the University of Missouri press box for a lunch (hosted by Tom Miltenberger '68) overlooking the football field, followed by undergraduate-led campus tours. The centennial celebration began on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Expo Center in Columbia. John Hartman and Cole Kennedy '15 had the banquet hall looking perfect. Alumni and undergraduates mingled in the banquet hall with our dates and spouses until master of ceremonies Jason Hummert '09 called us to attention. Presentations were made by Dr. Cathy Scroggs, vice chancellor for student affairs at Mizzou; Brother Brian Warren, Virginia Eta '04, SigEp's chief executive officer; Brother Cole Kennedy, past VP of programing; and keynote speaker Brother Zar Toolan, NY Phi '01, senior vice president with Wells Fargo Advisors. After the welcome by Chapter President Alex Smith '16 and the invocation by Tyler Leonard '16, Chaplain, introductions were given by Mike Weber '15, Michael Yenzer '15, and Mark Flower '14. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Distinguished Alumnus Award to David LaRusso '76 and Vern Smith '73, by Mark Flower. After the undergraduate awards, our centennial celebration was complete. Everyone who participated in the weekend felt a new excitement for our beloved chapter. Sports Success this Spring During the centennial, we were also participating in the competitive Greek Week sports events. Along with our partners, Pi Beta Phi, we finished the weekend with arguably the greatest sports finish in Greek Week history. Out of the four sports, we were awarded first place in football and soccer and finished second in volleyball and basketball. We followed up our Greek Week games with domination in Greek League intramurals. Our basketball teams finished their regular seasons a combined 14-0 and the B basketball team won the championship. Our sand volleyball team finished their regular season 6-0 and received a second place award in the playoffs. Finally, our 4-on-4 football team finished an undefeated regular season by winning first place in the Greek League playoffs. It has been an incredible semester here at Missouri Alpha and I am sad to see it end. In the fall we will participate in Mizzou's 103rd Homecoming, paired with the women of Kappa Delta. Though it is easy to look forward to next semester, we are completely focused on doing the best we can on our final exams!
