Tuesday, May 10, 2011 – Daily News – 5A WORLD BRIEFING Ariz. governor taking state’s appeal on implementation of immigration law to US Supreme Court PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced Monday she will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that put the most controversial parts of the state’s immigration enforcement law on hold. The planned appeal to the high court comes after Brewer lost an initial appeal April 11, when a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to reverse a lower court’s order that prevented key parts of the law from being enforced. Attorney General Tom Horne said going directly to the Supreme Court and skipping a possible second appeal to the 9th Circuit will save time in resolving the case, while Brew- er said she is confident ‘‘Arizona will prevail in its fight to protect its citizens.’’ The state must file the appeal by a July 11 deadline, the two Republican elected officials said. The Supreme Court has discretion on whether to hear the appeal on the lower court’s order. ‘‘It seems like this is a big enough national issue that it will ultimately be determined by the United States Supreme Court,’’ Horne said. Steinbrenner helped FBI in 2 investigations before pardon WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI released documents Monday stating that New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner assisted the agency in two investigations — one of them apparently a terrorism probe — in the years leading up to his pardon by President Ronald Reagan on a campaign-contributions conviction. The Associated Press and other news organizations requested the FBI file under the Freedom of Information Act following Steinbrenner’s death in July. The first release was made last December. The two releases combined totaled about 800 pages. In a newly released 1988 FBI memo, the FBI said that it ‘‘supports the contention that George Steinbrenner has pro- vided the FBI with valuable assistance.’’ Seven months later, Reagan pardoned Steinbrenner for his convictions in a case involving campaign donations to President Richard Nixon and other politicians. The documents, included in the second release of Stein- brenner’s FBI file, also show that he blamed his illegal cor- porate campaign contribution to Nixon on bad legal advice. Nation’s 1st full face transplant recipient makes public appearance at Mass. hospital BOSTON (AP) — The nation’s first full face transplant recipient said the first thing his young daughter told him when she saw him after the operation was ‘‘Daddy, you’re so handsome.’’ Dallas Wiens, sporting a goatee and dark sunglasses, joined surgeons Monday at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston in his first public appearance since the 15-hour procedure in March. ‘‘It feels natural,’’ said the 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man, who received a new nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves from an anonymous donor. The operation was paid for by the U.S. military, which hopes to use findings from the pro- cedure to help soldiers with severe facial wounds. Wiens’ features were all but burned away and he was left blind after hitting a power line while painting a church in November 2008. On Monday, Wiens appeared before a packed room of reporters and photographers with a new, somewhat swollen face and a new head of hair. Within moments Sunday, a flight attendant tackled Rageh Almurisi. Authorities do not yet have a motive. While authorities said that Almurisi, 28, of Vallejo, Calif., has no clear or known ties to terrorism, the incident under- scored fears that extremists may try to mount attacks to retal- iate for the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden last week. Federal agents are investigating Almurisi’s background. He was carrying a Yemeni passport and a California identi- fication card, authorities said. Cycling rocked by tragedy as Belgian cyclist Weylandt dies in crash during Giro stage MILAN (AP) — Hurtling down an Italian mountain pass at a speed that only a car would normally reach, Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt lost control of his bike for just a split second. In a sport where the smallest mistake can have catastrophic consequences, it proved lethal. Weylandt tumbled to his death Monday in a downhill crash during the third stage of the Giro d’Italia, with the rid- ers going 40 mph to 50 mph at the time. It was the first fatal- ity at the Italian race in 25 years and the first at one of the sport’s showcase tours in 16 years. It was one of the most high-profile deaths at an interna- tional sports event since Georgian luger Nodar Kumari- tashvili’s fatal crash in training on the eve of last year’s Van- couver Olympics. It also renewed questions about safety in cycling, where riders zip down winding mountain roads with steep drops and hairpin curves. ‘‘Our sport is very tragic at times. It has been throughout its history,’’ said British rider David Millar, who took the pink jersey as race leader after Monday’s stage but said it now meant ‘‘nothing.’’ ‘‘The bottom line is that the guys here are the best cyclists in the world, and the best guys in the world can have a mechanical fault or find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time,’’ Millar said. Facebook sharing sending readers to big news sites SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook is influencing what news gets read online as people use the Internet’s most popular hangout to share and recommend content. That’s one of the key findings from a study on the flow of traffic to the Web’s 25 largest news destinations. The study was released Monday by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. Facebook was responsible for 3 percent of traffic to the 21 news sites that allowed data to be tracked, according to EVERYDAY 9:00am to 6:00pm 345 So. Five of the sites stud- ied got 6 percent to 8 percent of their readers from Facebook. The referrals typically came from links posted by friends on Facebook’s social-networking site or from the ubiquitous “like” buttons, which Facebook encourages other websites to place alongside their content. The Facebook effect is small compared with Google’s clout. Google Inc.’s dominant search engine supplies about 30 percent of traffic to the top news sites, according to Pew. But Facebook and other sharing tools, such as Addthis.com, are empowering people to rely on their online social circles to point out interesting content. By contrast, Google uses an automated formula to help people find news. Facebook is at the forefront of this shift because it has more than 500 million worldwide users. That’s far more than any other Internet service built for socializing and sharing. “If searching for the news was the most important devel- opment of the last decade, sharing the news may be among the most important of the next,” the Pew report said. Meanwhile, major news sites are getting less than 1 per- cent of their traffic from Twitter, even though it had about 175 million accounts last year. Among those studied by Pew, only the Los Angeles Times’ website got more traffic from Twitter than Facebook. Twitter accounted for 3.5 percent of the online traffic to the Los Angeles Times, compared with slightly more than 2 percent from Facebook. The Drudge Report, a site started during the 1990s, is a far more significant traffic source for news sites than Twitter, according to the Pew study. The Pew report is based on an analysis of Internet traffic data compiled by the research firm Nielsen Co. during the first nine months of last year. SC teen charged with killing mom on Mother’s Day GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A high school sophomore in South Carolina shot his mother to death and critically injured his brother after a family argument on Mother’s Day, police said Monday. Joshua David McEachern, 17, was ordered held without bond on a murder charge after a brief court appearance. It was not clear if he had an attorney. Sheriff’s deputies did not release details of the dispute that led to the shootings around 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the McEachern home in Greenville. They said 59-year-old Kathy McEachern was killed and 21- year-old Daniel McEachern was in critical condition. More charges were expected later Monday. After the shootings, deputies said, Joshua McEachern called 911 and cooperated with authorities when they arrived but didn’t tell them why he shot his relatives. Respecting People.
