on opposite sides of the free- way. Investigators collected video from the two vehicles, which were the exact make and models of those in - volved in the crash, to sim- ulate what the drivers saw, CHP Capt. Todd Morrison said. The purpose isn't to re-create the crash, but to capture images from both directions to get an idea of what the drivers saw in the 2011 Setra bus and the 2007 Volvo big rig. Both drivers died, both vehicles were badly burned. A cause for the accident is not known. Morrison, who oversees the Multidisciplinary Ac - cident Investigation Team, emphasized that investi- gators are not close to de- termining what caused the crash, but closer to gather- ing all the information that is needed to start analyzing evidence and eventually de- termine what happened. "We feel strongly and passionately that we owe it to the families to tell them what happened," Morrison said, mirroring CHP North - ern Division Chief Ruben Leal's statement during the press conference. "We're going to find out what oc - curred. We're going to fig- ure this out." The agency will not spec- ulate on what caused the collision until all the facts are reviewed, Leal said. At the press confer - ence, the CHP released emergency calls made in the frantic moments after the crash, which occurred about 5:40 p.m. Thursday, just north of Highway 32 on I-5. The calls included students on their cell - phones who were involved in the wreck and did not know exactly where they were, but also included Orland residents who de - scribed precisely where the accident was on the freeway. Morrison said Thurs - day's testing will help de- termine how fast the bus was traveling prior to the impact. Investigators recorded from inside the FedEx tractor-trailer the sound as it went over the "rumble strips" — indentations on the outside of the lanes — in an attempt to determine whether the driver would have heard it. M o r r i s o n e x p l a i n e d there's been speculation the FedEx truck driver did not apply the brakes, but investigators don't know if he braked. They've found no skid marks, but Morri - son said the driver still may have braked. A Nissan Altima simi- lar to the third vehicle in- volved in the crash was not tested Thursday but will be tested later. All the records associ - ated with the vehicles and the drivers, as well as wit- nesses statements, are still being collected by the CHP. One electronic control module inside the bus was heavily damaged during the collision, but has been sent to be analyzed, Morrison said. Investigators aren't sure what information it will have. A different electronic module that would tell such things as the speed and whether the brakes were applied was destroyed by the fire, CHP public infor - mation officer Phillip Mack- intosh said. During the press confer- ence, CHP officials stated the agency had sought to obtain cellphone records of both drivers to see whether distracted driving played a role but had not acquired them. CHP will be doing more investigative work in the area, but will be moving down to Los Angeles next week to interview victims. Witnesses who saw the collision occur have been identified through 9-1-1 calls and will be imperative to the investigation. However, CHP officials are still asking people to come forward. They are en - couraged to call 530-225- 2715. Contact reporter Almendra Carpizo at 896-7760. Crash From Page 1 Baumgartner. Round-Up saddle bronc rid- ing champion, Cort Scheer, he's glad to return. Last year was the first time the Elsmere, Neb. cowboy entered the Round-Up, and he'll be back this year. Not only did he win the saddle bronc riding, but he won the Wild Ride as well. "I w as p re tt y lu ck y, " he said. "It's such a good rodeo. Especially after you ride in the regular rodeo, and then get to have fun in the wild ride." This year, he will ride on Friday night so he will miss the Wild Ride, which he regrets. "I dang sure hate to miss it. I had a danged good costume." Last year, Scheer dressed as a woman; this year, he had hoped to dress as a blind ro - deo judge. All eight of last year's Round-Up champs will re- turn to vie for a repeat of their title. The 2013 champs are JR Vezain in bareback riding, Tuf Cooper in tie- down roping, Stan Branco in steer wrestling, Scheer in saddle bronc riding, Calvin Brevik and Travis Wood - ard in team roping, Trula Churchill in barrel racing and Cody Campbell in bull riding. She was married in Twentynine Palms, California on December 3, 1950 to Robert D. Lake (Bob). Joanie passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 9, 2014. Joan was preceded in death by her parents Leroy R. Lashmett and Wrayma C. Lashmett née Bray. Joan's fami- ly includes her husband of 63 years, Robert D. Lake; her sister Jean Karas and her family; their four children, Ste- ven C. Lake (Doris Ludwig Lake), Colleen J. Lindsay, Kel- ly L. Sparks (Paul Evans), and Daniel J. Lake (Nieves); their nine grandchildren, Brian Lake (Clare), Kirsten Ahonen (Seth), Michael Lindsay (Clarissa), Lisa Lindsay, Rodney Sparks (Abby), Joe Sparks, Daniel R. Lake, Bethany Hanson née Evans (Chris), Hannah Evans; and their fourteen great-grandchildren. Joan moved to Twentynine Palms, California in 1947. It was there, in high school, that this sweet sixteen year old met Bob Lake. Joan was a strong athletic girl and a cheerleader at Twentynine Palms High School. She loved music, played the piano, and loved to sing. Especially loved singing in harmony. She loved to perform on stage and had many costumes and props for skits from "Annie Get Your Gun". She loved talent shows and was very good at pantomime. Joan was also a fairly good artist with pastel chalk. In 1956, after moving around a bit, Joan and Bob moved to El Portal, California. In 1967 they moved to Yosemite National Park and stayed there until 1975 when they moved to Mesa Verde National Park. In 1977 they moved to Mineral, California, near Lassen Volcanic National Park, then to Red Bluff, California. There they stayed until 2009 when they moved to Antelope, California, just north of Sacramento, to be next to their daughter, Kelly and her husband Paul. Joan was always a loving person. She was smart, funny, and almost always happy. She never refused a hug, and was always happy to see you. She was so devoted to her family. Joan said she always wanted to be known as a very happy-go-lucky person with a love for life and a wonderful family. Joan loved to work around people. Some of her happi- est times were when she worked at the El Portal Post Of- fice, the El Portal Store, and later at the Yosemite National Park General Store. She poured out so much love for life, her husband, her children, and her friends. We will all miss her very much.
