Alumnus Shares Success and Advice Next Move: A Permanent House for MSU Betas Help Make is Dream a Reality THe DrAgoN'S WAgoN G A m m A P S i C h A P t e r o f B e t A t h e t A P i Spring 2014 B eta Theta Pi is established again at MSU and we will seek to regain our charter this summer. The Beta Tau Alumni Corporation (BTAC), the Pride in Our Past, Legacy for Our Future fundraising committee, and I want to thank the loyal alumni for donating $175,642 to the campaign. We are well on our way to meet the over-reaching goal for MSU Beta: to establish a permanent house that actives and alumni can call home for decades. Now that we have a great colony and are renting the 207 Bogue Street house, the next steps are to use the funds from our previous, beloved house and from our increasingly successful fundraising campaign to establish a new permanent MSU Beta home. The housing market in East Lansing has changed a lot over the decades. Much of the prime real estate is controlled by a few large rental corporations. An indicator of the leverage these few firms have is that it's quite common now for students to commit in early October for housing starting the next August academic year. Finding a good fit involves time and timing. We would also like to buy the right sized house for the future. We are preparing for financing to move quickly with a decision. With the help of our real estate agent who specializes in rental property acquisitions in East Lansing and MSU Beta alumni support, BTAC's housing committee has been and will be in East Lansing looking for a permanent house this spring. Can you help us with this impactful task? Other alumni are assisting. Especially if you live in central Michigan, or are up in East Lansing frequently, let me know if you would like to join our housing committee. Help be the bridge that connects our undergraduates to the tradition of having a chapter house. Also, if you have not already, please consider a gift to the fundraising campaign by returning the enclosed pledge card to ensure we have the resources to build that bridge. W hen Gary Smith '90 came to Michigan State University he was looking for an opportunity to enhance his college experience, which drew him to the Greek system. "Once I met the members of Beta Theta Pi I knew it was the right place for me because of the people, brotherhood, and values of the chapter." Gary got involved quickly serving as the social chairman for three semesters. "I have so many great college memories; needless to say, the best ones came from my time as a Beta." Gary graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He obtained a sales and marketing position with the Ford Motor Company through an on-campus interview as a senior at MSU. Since then he has had several leadership positions and is now the director of marketing for Con-way Freight, (Continued on page 2) One of three awards Gamma Psi was awarded at the Keystone Leadership Conference.
