Gamma Xi Anchor 3 T he women of Gamma Xi Chapter showed Vicki Chapman '75 that not only were Delta Gammas attractive, they were intelligent, enthusiastic, and great conversationalists. Vicki was honored to join the chapter in 1975, and she is still proud to be a member today. By staying involved with the fraternity, Vicki has built a huge network of Delta Gamma friends and given back to the community that gave her so much when she was an undergraduate. Vicki recalls that her pledge class was particularly strong. "There was a group of about six seniors in the chapter that were fun-loving, gorgeous, and very confident. Throughout our pledgeship, they tried to play several pranks on our pledge class, but we were a very confident group and mostly derailed their plans. The constant competition between us made for many great memories," Vicki shared. But her favorite Delta Gamma memory came when she was an alumna. "My daughter, Lauren Chapman '05, went through recruitment at the University of Southern California in 2005. To my great delight, she pledged Delta Gamma. I had the joy of reliving my collegiate memories, sharing in her Delta Gamma experiences, and participating in the Alpha Nu Parents Club activities." Vicki's involvement in Delta Gamma has also continued to flourish as an alumna because she served as the recruitment advisor for Alpha Upsilon. "Vicki Vannoy Nixon '70 had been my advisor at Gamma Xi and she recommended me to serve as an advisor at Southern Methodist University. I served for three years as the chapter's recruitment advisor, and I worked with a great group of alumnae on the advisory board and we have remained very close friends to this day," Vicki said. Now Vicki has a tremendous network of Delta Gamma members across the country from Gamma Xi, Alpha Upsilon advisory board, and Alpha Nu parent's club. Giving both time and monetary gifts to the chapter helps ensure Gamma Xi's success and security for the coming decades. "I believe it is so important to continually improve and provide experiences and knowledge for a strong chapter," Vicki said. "Strong alumnae involvement strengthens the chapter and enables Gamma Xi to compete with other sororities." Today, Vicki serves on foundation boards and travels with her husband and Anchor Man, Bob. Their daughter, Lauren, is now an alumna and serves as the director of scholarship for Alpha Upsilon at SMU. The Importance of Giving Back to Delta Gamma What Inspires Vicki Chapman '75 to Stay Connected F or the past 141 years Delta Gamma has been changing the lives of young women all across the country. This certainly holds true for Bonnie Oden '71. "Delta Gamma changed my life," Bonnie said. "I was a misfit in high school. I lived in a small town, and I chose to go to Texas Tech because I wanted to go to college somewhere that I didn't know anyone. When I went through sorority recruitment I was very excited that chapters were asking me to come back, but I chose Delta Gamma. Everyone was so friendly. Once I pledged, I instantly I had a group of friends with which I had so much in common." Bonnie was a legacy at Delta Gamma, but she says that wasn't the primary reason she chose Delta Gamma. It was all about how nice and friendly the women of Gamma Xi were. Years later, Bonnie still values her relationships with her Gamma Xi sisters. Looking back on her college experience fills her with joy. "After I pledged, the first thing Gamma Xi did was have a mixer with a fraternity. The older girls made sure that I had dates because they didn't want me or other pledges to sit around the dorm the first week feeling isolated. They wanted me to adjust to college life and be happy so they were always setting me up with great guys. It was just like a movie—I went from being the girl in high school who didn't have a date to the prom to having so many dates that they were set up weeks in advance. The older girls also made sure that we were adjusting to life at a large college and helped us if we had any adjustment problems. That was very helpful, particularly during that first semester and year."
