Beginning in the 2012 season, schools will be placed into a division based only on its own enrollment. Previously, the 10 schools with the largest enrollment numbers were placed in Division I. The next 10 enroll- ments were Division II and so on. The Northern Section’s football playoff committee passed the proposal at its March 23 meeting. The NSCIF published the meeting’s minutes, Tuesday, on its website. The new system puts any school with at least 1,000 stu- dents into Division I. There is no limit or minimum to the schools in a division. According to current projections nine schools would qualify for Division I — Chico, Enterprise, Foothill, Las See FOOTBALL, page 2B Tehama Tracker GOLF 2011 Pleasant Valley Invitational Daily News photo by Rich Greene Red Bluff central defender Rachel Ward races down the ball,Tuesday, in the first half. SOCCER University Prep 1 Red Bluff 1 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Mickenzie Perdue’s intelligent and beautifully placed strike late in the second half, Tuesday, lifted the Lady Spartans to a 1-1 draw with vis- iting University Prep. The Red Bluff striker won a 50-50 ball in the 72nd minute, noticed Uni- versity Prep’s goalie was off her line and lobbed a shot from 30 yards out over her head and into the goal. After a sluggish first half, in which Red Bluff surrendered the opening goal and couldn’t maintain possession, the Lady Spartans began gaining confidence over the final 40 minutes. “I just think we were more moti- vated to score, because we had that drive,” Perdue said. Red Bluff coach Geoff Barrow said at halftime he told his team to focus on playing “simple and smart.” Red Bluff hadn’t tested University Prep’s goalie much in the first half. Alex Levindofske had the Spar- tans’ best scoring opportunity, when she fired a high shot from about 20 yards out following a corner kick. However the Spartans couldn’t string together enough passes to pose a threat. Meanwhile their defense, led by Rachel Ward, kept the game within a goal’s reach. Late in the second half the Spar- tans began finding success. In the 70th minute Jill Bilodeaux earned a Red Bluff free kick from the left of goal. Lexi Nanfito delivered a perfectly placed cross, but no Spartan could put a head on it. But the Spartans kept the pressure in U-Prep’s third and minutes later Perdue struck the back of the net. Red Bluff goalie Kaity Knox made a few saves down the stretch to maintain the draw. “We have a ways to go just to fur- ther gel this group as a possession unit — just moving better and sup- porting each other,” Barrow said.
