Both entered recruitment in 1956 and knew pi Beta phi was the one for them. as it remains today, the Chapter had high standards then. each woman was expected to make grades, participate in college activities, and act like a lady. The whole pledge class was enrolled by treasured alumna Berniece Spears, Oklahoma Beta '36, in an etiquette class at The lubbock woman's Club. Jane recalls wonderful memories from her pi phi years wearing green beanies with pi phi on the bill, laughing about the etiquette classes, getting actives' signatures, singing "mary margaret Truman," pledge and Chapter meetings, fiasco pledge skits, reading to children as part of their philanthropy, and supporting sisters in their activities. it is through all these activities that their pledge class became so close. nancy recalls the moment the friendship was sealed forever. after breaking her leg on a pi phi ski trip, Jane was forced to leave her duties as sophomore advisor on the second floor of the freshman dorm and her lifelong friend and pledge sister, Martha Kaiser Justice '57, for a room on the first floor. Marilyn Gardner Woods '58, a pi phi freshman, had also broken her leg. Both ladies had hard casts going up their leg. They made perfect roommates. nancy lived across the hall and gladly volunteered to be their nurse. from then on Jane and nancy took classes together, and after graduation moved in together in Dallas with Pat Rainer Hurst '55 and another pi phi. Both Jane and nancy were bankers. Jane was very generous with her cute, sporty Carmen Ghia that nancy loved. They enjoyed single life with fun outings, shopping, and lots of laughter. Jane was the first to get married and moved out to the country with her husband, art. she soon became a stay-at-home mother to three children: Bart, allison, and Blake. nancy stayed in the city with a career in business. Their lives had flipped- flopped, but they were still as close as ever. Jane would frequent Dallas and the two would have a girl's day that included shopping, catching up, and doing pi phi things together. nancy recalls a distinct moment in their friendship when her first husband had passed away. No one had been told of John's death, but Jane and her husband, art, suddenly appeared on nancy's doorstep responding that something felt wrong. That bond can never be broken. when nancy remarried, she remodeled her home so that Jane could still have her own bedroom. Both women support and serve on the capital campaign board. Jane's decision to give back to Texas Gamma was easy. "i was given so much more than i could ever repay from the life lessons and friendships i gained. it is an outstanding Chapter, and the campaign is to help keep the Chapter competitive and make room for growth. no matter the size of the gift, all are important to reach our goal." she hopes alumnae feel the same bond as she did and support the campaign. Jane resides in a small east Texas town where she participates in church activities, mentors children in grade school, works with hospice and the foundation at northeast Texas Community College, and, of course, does pi phi activities. she recently received the lifetime achievement award from the mount pleasant Chamber of Commerce. nancy states, "Jane is far too modest. she has enriched the lives of many in her hometown and mt. pleasant is a far better place to call home because of my loyal friend." nancy resides in Dallas and has been employed for 47 years by the Deal group of companies. Her first boss at Deal was the mother of Texas Gamma pi phi Dr. Karen Williams Teel '56. Nancy was involved in the financing of the A&M pi phi house as well as the construction of the smu pi phi house. nancy and Jane agree that pi phi truly is forever.
