ANDRE BYIK — DAILY NEWS Corning High's Alex Davila, le, Chance Nelson, middle, and Chayce Maday celebrate aer winning the Northern Section CIF Division IV boys basketball title Saturday at Acker Gym. By Travis Souders Chico Enterprise-Record @travissouders on Twitter CHICO » Size, skill, shooters — in the end, the Corning High boys basketball team's second consecutive Northern Section title was a result of all those things, and a whole lot of experience in winning ballgames. Ch ay ce Ma da y sc or ed a game-high 21 points, Nick Hoag added 15 and the Car - dinals beat Gridley 56-49 on Saturday night at Acker Gym for the Division IV champion- ship, the second year in a row for Corning. The win earned Corn- ing a home playoff game in the state playoffs. The No. 9 seed Cardinals will host Sac- ramento's Encina Prep 7 p.m. Wednesday in the CIF Divi- sion-IV tournament's first round. The winner gets the North Bracket's top seed in Hayward's Moreau Catholic. For the senior trio of Ma - day, Hoag and Michael Shoe- maker, who scored 12 points and had seven blocks, it was the perfect Northern Section career finisher for a group that has gone 76-11 at the var - sity level. "Those guys are used to winning," Corning coach Bill Mache said. "This is still a special accomplishment." Maday's balanced scoring paced the Cardinals (24-4) throughout, while big spurts elsewhere led Corning to the title against upset-minded Gridley (16-12), which gave its opponent a battle the whole way but couldn't complete the uphill climb. "Gridley was physical," Shoemaker said. " They have really good shooters, they were well-prepared for us and they gave us a run for our money." Using the same clog-the- middle zone that worked so sublimely in the semifi - nal against Orland, the Bull- dogs made it clear they didn't come to Acker to be bullied by the defending champi- ons. But the going certainly wasn't easy. Clearly outsized, Gridley showed no trepidation in the opening stages of the game, moving ahead 9-6 until two straight Shoemaker buck - ets gave the Cardinals the lead, one that was 13-11 after the opening 8 minutes. Corn - ing moved ahead 19-13 on two Maday 3-pointers, but Grid- ley answered right back with buckets from Quinn Spring and Samuel Cota to draw to within a point before Shoe - maker dropped in another la- yup to make it a 6-point game by halftime. "We knew Gridley was a well-coached team and they play with discipline," Mache said. "We just had to do our stuff, not get outside of our - selves and do what we do." Again, Gridley kept things within reach in the third pe- riod, with two 3s from Em- ery Haddy cutting the Car- dinals' advantage to 2 points again, but another 3 from Ma- day and two short jumpers prep BOyS BaSkeTBall way to win Cardinals capture second straight section title By andre Byik sports@redbluffdailynews.com @TehamaSports on Twitter reD BlUFF » About 175 runners partic- ipated in the Color in Motion 5K run Saturday morning at Red Bluff Union High School in what was described as Tehama County's capstone event in rec - ognition of National Girls and Women in Sports Week. Mervin Edy Wolf, who was arrested last week, is charged with travel with intent to engage in il- licit sexual conduct and production of child por- nography. The girl was living with California relatives of Wolf and his wife, who moved to Colorado from that state in 1999, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Denver. The case was investigated by the FBI with sup - port from the Tehama County Sheriff's Depart- ment. The couple visited the California relatives reg- ularly, sometimes for two-week periods, staying at the home of a woman relative who was taking care of the girl. Wolf subsequently told investigators he began producing the child porn when the girl was 9-years- old. "The first few occurrences included porno - graphic pictures of Minor #1 with no sexual con- tact, Wolf stated. Then it escalated to something else," according to the complaint. In January 2013, the girl contacted Wolf and told him she was afraid she may be pregnant, accord - ing to the complaint.
