BASEBALL Corning 2 7 2 Red Bluff 12 13 1 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Cardinals jumped on Red Bluff early, Wednesday, but it was nothing compared to the damage the Spartans’ bats did to Corning later in the game. Modesto Ramirez went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs, Zane Medeiros provided effective relief work and the Spartans responded from an early two- run deficit to knock off their county rivals 12-2, in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans put together a seven-run inning to take control of the game as they sent 12 batters to the plate. With one out, Storm Lewis singled, Taylor Figgs beat out an infield hit and Mitch Robison was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cole Robinson then drove in a run with an RBI infield hit to tie the game and a batter later the Spartans took their first lead of the day when Gerald Baker bombed a sacrifice fly to center field. With two outs the rally continued as Richard Penne was hit by a pitch, Ramirez drove in a run and Jordan Fox followed with a two-RBI single. Joel Duggins came up to the plate for the second time in the inning and reached on a single. Then the Cardinals defense dropped a fly ball to score Fox and make the game 8-2 Red Bluff. The Spartans went right back to work in the fifth inning as Robison led off with a single. Two batters later, Baker reached when Corning tried to nail the lead run- ner at second base, but Robison’s speed beat out the throw. Penne then drew his second walk of the game to load the bases. Ramirez was then plunked to drive home a run. Fox followed with another RBI sin- gle. The mercy 10-run rule was reached with just one out as with the bases still loaded Duggins was walked and Jorge Caldera was hit by a pitch to bring home two more runs. When the game started it appeared 5 inn but couldn’t pull out the doubles win they needed to claim their team match against West Valley. Three of the six singles matches went to a super tiebreak- er, with Corning win two of them as Javier Curiel defeated Sammye Jones 3-6, 8-6, 10-5 and Kyle Hansen knocked off Tyler Flournoy 5-7, 7-5, 10-6. No. 1 singles Ryan Howell defeated Bryanl Shafer 6-3, 6-1 and Eric Espinoza knocked off Devo Wilkins 6-4, 6-1. Nets top Warriors Warriors 90 New Jersey 94 NEWARK, N.J. Corning opened the game with three consecutive triples from Cole MacLachlan, Michael Garcia and Tyler McIntyre. Austin Arbogast then drew a walk to drive home the game’s first run and the Cardinals picked up a second run on a double play ball with the bases still loaded. That gave Corning a 2-0 lead, which they held through the first two innings behind Garcia, who worked the first two frames on the mound for Corning. The Cardinals threatened to put more runs on the board in the third inning. As part of a 3-for-3 game, MacLachlan singled again to start the inning. Figgs made a diving catch in center to record an out, but McIntyre and Arbogast took walks to load the bases. Red Bluff brought in Medeiros from the bullpen, who caught the next two Cardinals looking at strike three pitches to get out of the jam. “I gotta’ help my teammate out,” Medeiros said in regards to what he was thinking coming into the situation. “I just got to battle back.” With disaster diverted, the Spartans settled down in their half of the third inning and got on the scoreboard with a two-out rally started with a Baker double to the center field fence. Penne drew a walk and Ramirez drove in Baker with a single to center to make it 2-1. “We’re starting to get our bats together now,” Ramirez said. “Pretty soon we’ll start mashing — I’ll believe in my teammates.” Casey Hilsee scored twice and stole a base as a pinch runner for Red Bluff, which improved to 5-1 on the season. Toronto in London, the NBA’s first regular-season games in Europe. New Jersey had a 51-49 halftime lead on the strength of an 18-6 run to end the first quarter. The Warriors outscored the Nets 28-23 in the third period, highlighted by a break- away dunk by Ellis, Lee’s two-handed dunk and a buzzer- beating floater in the lane by Ellis. Humphries and Lopez combined for what may have been the game-deciding defensive sequence late in the fourth quarter. Lopez blocked Curry’s layup attempt and Humphries swatted Ekpe Udoh’s dunk attempt. Golden State was called for a shot clock violation on the subsequent possession. Still, the Warriors only trailed by two when Ellis pulled up from the foul line with 3 seconds remaining. His shot was short and Lopez grabbed the rebound before being fouled by the Warriors’ starting shooting guard.
